Red Meat Increases the Risk of Kidney Cancer

People who eat lots of red meat may have a higher risk of kidney cancer, according to researchers from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth.

Researchers found that middle-aged adults who ate the most red meat (about 4 ounces of red meat a day) were 19% more likely to be diagnosed with kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma i.e. RCC) than those who ate the least (less than 1 ounce a day). Higher intake of chemicals found in grilled or barbecued meat was also linked to increased risk of the disease.

The study is published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Man Sued for Retaining Former Employer's Twitter Follower List

Posted on December 27, 2011 11:50 AM by Rob Williams

With the advent of social services like Facebook and Twitter, the idea of what's "owned" by either the service or the person has been often debated. When your former employer is behind the questioning, however, things can get really murky, really fast. Case in point: the experience of Noah Kravitz, former employee of Phonedog, a website focusing on mobile technology.

During his tenure with Phonedog, Noah amassed about 17,000 followers while representing the company. After he left the company, he changed his Twitter name to get rid of the Phonedog moniker (something I didn't even realize was possible), and retained those followers. Phonedog isn't too happy about this, as it believes?its resources went into attracting all these followers, and as such, the list belongs to it.

As Noah refused to give back the Twitter account, Phonedog has decided to sue him for $2.50 per user, for a total of $370,000. At the same time, Noah insinuates that Phonedog gave him permission to retain the list, as long as he talked about the company from time to time through his tweets.

As someone who runs a tech website similar to Phonedog, I can understand where the company is on this one, and am kind of on their side. If I had an employee working for me amassing boatloads of followers while on the clock, I'd want to retain that list after the employee has left, replacing his likeness with someone else that comes on board. It's just simple business, and much like a mailing list, you're not going to let someone up and walk out with it.

That said, if Phonedog didn't have it as a written signed rule somewhere that the list would have to be handed over after termination of employment, then it's a little hard to see a winning case here. And at that, $2.50 per user is a bit extreme, especially when you consider that the vast majority of Twitter followers don't ardently read what you have to say given they follow so many people / companies.

What are your thoughts on this?

Kinect sensor wants to guess astronauts' weight, tell them to hit the space gym

How do you weigh yourself when there's no gravity keeping you down? Well, you can calculate your mass by sitting on an oscillating spring and comparing its standing frequency to your riding frequency (NASA's current method), or you could rig up a Kinect sensor to tell you when you're getting fat. Carmelo Velardo, a Eurocom computer scientist in Alphes-Maritimes, France, is developing the latter option. Working with colleagues at the Italian Institute of Technology's Center for Human Space Robotics, Velardo paired the Kinect sensor's 3D modeling digs with a database of weight to body measurements of 28,000 people -- the resulting system can guess your weight with a 97 percent accuracy.

NASA scientist John Charles notes that while the rig works well on the ground, it might hit some snags in space. Microgravity can shift water around in an astronaut's body, changing their density and potentially throwing off the Kinect setup's readings. Still, Charles says the technique "appears feasible," and suggests pairing it with the existing weight measurement tools might "provide insights into changes in body density that might be illuminating." Velardo hopes to test the system in parabolic flight soon. If he succeeds, not even outer space will protect us from the shameful judgment of video game peripherals. Now if you'll excuse us, we have some squat-thrusts to get to.

Yuan hits all-time high, on track for over-4 percent gain in '11 (Reuters)

SHANGHAI (Reuters) ? The yuan closed up against the dollar on Monday after hitting an all-time high in intraday trading, guided by a stronger mid-point by the People's Bank of China, and looks set for an over-4-percent appreciation for 2011, traders said.

The yuan is expected to remain stable or rise slightly in the last week of the year to close 2011 near 6.30 versus the dollar, in line with market expectations.

The currency is likely to continue to appreciate next year as China continues to post big trade surpluses despite a slowdown in exports and amid pressure from the United States to let the yuan rise to balance bilateral trade, traders said.

But the yuan's appreciation is likely to slow to around 3 percent in 2012, with much of the rise seen in the second half of next year as China may keep the yuan relatively stable in the first half to assess the impact of the euro zone crisis, they said.

"The PBOC has recently set a slew of strong mid-points and pumped dollars into the market via state banks, giving the market a clear signal that the government won't let the yuan depreciate," said a trader at a major Chinese bank in Shanghai.

"But the central bank appears not in a hurry to let the yuan appreciate amid global economic uncertainties resulting from the euro zone debt crisis. So the yuan is likely to move largely sideways in coming months."

Spot yuan closed at 6.3198 against the dollar, up from Friday's close of 6.3364, after hitting an all-time high of 6.3160. Its previous peak was 6.3294 hit on December 16.

The PBOC set the dollar/yuan mid-point at 6.3167 on Monday, stronger than Friday's 6.3209 and near the record-high fixing of 6.3165 on November 4.

FIGHTING SPECULATORS

The yuan has appreciated 4.27 percent so far this year, with most of the gain being recorded in the first 10 months of the year as China tries to rebalance trade and use the currency to help fight high inflation.

While the government has recently halted yuan appreciation amid slowing exports, it also seems to be wary of a weaker yuan that may lead to capital outflows.

Some overseas investors appear to have been shorting the yuan in recent months amid signs that China's growth is slowing under the double weight of a global slowdown and the country's monetary tightening policy in place since October last year.

The PBOC, in addition to using strong mid-points to signal government intentions to keep the yuan stable, has also acted to inject dollars into the market via state-owned banks whenever there are signs that the yuan is set to weaken sharply.

The yuan has thus been effectively kept in a range of 6.3 to 6.4 against the dollar since early November -- a trend traders say they believe to continue well into 2012.

In contrast, offshore benchmark one-year non-deliverable forwards (NDFs) have largely been forecasting a yuan depreciation in a year's time since late September, reversing a general trend of predicting an appreciation since the yuan's revaluation in July 2005.

One-year NDFs fell slightly to 6.3790 on Monday against 6.3810 at the close on Friday, implying that the yuan will depreciate 0.97 percent in 12 months from Modnay's PBOC mid-point, compared with a 1.01 percent fall implied on Friday.

Matt Richardson turns Arduino, Twitter and lasers into art (video)

Fade Away 1
Matt Richardson's genius has never really been in question. The Make Live host and compulsive hacker has built an impressive library of creations, ranging from a Google Reader pedal to an email-triggered Christmas tree. The man's works are definitely art, in their own way, but his new project, Fade Away 1, is the first that we could easily see taking up residence in a SoHo gallery. At the heart of the installation is an Arduino (of course) that pulls in posts from Twitter with the phrase "fade away" in them. The same AVR chip then "prints" those tweets on phosphorescent paper with a UV laser mounted on a servo -- as the energy dissipates, the messages slowly disappear. And, if you're wondering what the "1" at the end of the title means, Richardson plans to continuously improve the project. For some more details about the next iteration and to see the current one in action, check out the videos after the break.

Obama rakes in campaign cash (Daily Caller)

The re-election campaign of President Obama and the Democratic National Committee are on track to net $60 million for the fourth quarter of the year, Reuters reports.

Obama had already raised roughly $155 million through September in an effort to raise more than $750 million for next November?s election.

?Enthusiasm for the White House?s policies has been steadily increasing and it will keep increasing,? major Democratic fundraiser Steven Cohen told the news service.

According to Cohen, the GOP?s bungled handling of the payroll tax fight is inspiring contributors to give more to Obama?s re-election campaign.

?Among the people who I have talked to, they are seeing a real demonstration of the president?s commitment to stand his ground,? he said.

The campaign had hoped to bring in $55 million last quarter. Instead they raised $70 million, even though last summer?s debt ceiling fight had forced President Obama to stay in Washington and cancel fundraisers in other parts of the country.

The 2012 election is already on its way to becoming the most expensive in history, with Obama expected to raise more than the record $750 million he had in the bank in 2008. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, among the front-runners for the GOP nomination, is expected to raise at least $20 million this quarter.

Time to Forget

Image: Photoillustration by Aaron Goodman

I sat at a piano in a sun-filled modern church. The audience?other young pianists and their parents?watched as I played the first eight notes of a piece by composer Edvard Grieg. At the ninth note, I froze. I tried again: da dee dee dee, da-da dee dee. Silence. On the third try, chords tumbled from my fingers, and the piece flowed from there.

That event at age 14 was scarring, and I soon stopped taking piano lessons. Two years ago, however, I revisited that dormant memory as the band I joined much later prepared for its public debut. Too bad I?m a terrible performer, I thought gloomily.

But as this month?s special report makes clear, recalling a memory also reshapes it. Memories are not preserved behind air locks in some squishy cellular vault. Rather they resemble clouds swirling in the currents. Change the conditions in which you remember, and the reminiscence twists accordingly, as journalist Ingfei Chen writes in ?A Feeling for the Past.? In the mutable landscape of memory, a sharp mind must also delete thoughts selectively. Scientific American Mind?s Ingrid Wickelgren explains why in ?Trying to Forget.? If letting things go is a struggle, the nuclear option?a pill to blot out the past?may soon offer respite, writes journalist Adam Piore in ?Totaling Recall.?

Experiments on memory reveal how slippery our sense of truth can be. Stephen L. Macknik and Susana Martinez-Conde, experts on visual illusions, show how researchers exploit our error-ridden models of reality in ?Mind-Warping Visions.? For a light take on our all-too-human inconsistencies, turn to ?The Partnership Paradox,? by NPR?s Joe Palca and Flora Lichtman. You will learn why your beloved?s once alluring traits now seem so singularly annoying.

As for my botched recital, I no longer dodge the memory as if rotting vegetables were flying at my face. The problem, I now believe, was not stage stupor but my lousy practice record at the time. By rewriting that old memory to underscore effort rather than incapability, I shifted my sense of self?and my hopes for the future.

Mayor Foxx: Aide's Behavior 'Highly Inappropriate'

In a shocking turn of events Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx today apologized to leaders of Charlotte's International Cabinet after his special assistant warned them to "please expect hell" with future budget requests if they failed to upgrade him to first-class on a November trip to China.

Even more shocking is that the $72,000 aide is still employed.

From The Charlotte Observer:

In a letter today to Sharon Reed, executive director of the International Cabinet, Foxx apologized for an email from aide Tracy Montross. Foxx called Montross's email "highly inappropriate."

"I cannot tell you how disappointed and surprised I was to read its contents," he wrote, "including an implication that the funds supporting the Charlotte International Cabinet would be jeopardized unless a request to reimburse my travel expenses was granted."

Two days after being re-elected, Foxx led an 11-member delegation to China in an effort to broaden the city's economic ties to the country. He and the delegation, including Montross, met with business and political leaders in Beijing, Shanghai and Charlotte's sister city of Baoding.

Email correspondence shows Montross sought the upgrade at least three times since mid-September. The International Cabinet turned it down.

"After considering the past practices and present financial capabilities of the organization and its stewardship of public dollars allocated to the CIC, the executive board unanimously voted NOT to fund the additional (money)," CIC Chair Maha Gingrich wrote Montross in September.

Writing from China, Montross emailed the cabinet to "please expect hell with your presentation to Council on next year's budget."

"There is no reason for (Foxx) to support this expenditure in years to come. His position has not changed but has become more resolute. Thanks for your consideration in advance of our return."

Thursday, a contrite Montross emailed Foxx. "I am incredibly embarrassed by my actions and my amateur approach in communicating with the Charlotte International Cabinet about this matter," she said. "I am equally devastated that my stupid mistake could bring into question your leadership commitment to our community."

Montross declined comment. Foxx could not be reached.

Montross, who earns $72,000 a year, was hired as the mayor's special assistant in the summer of 2010. She replaced Kevin Monroe, who left the city to work for the local host committee putting on the Democratic National Convention.

She had previously worked as a scheduler for Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana.
In her e-mail to the mayor, Montross said she was the "principal planner" for the China trip.

The mayor's assistant works for the mayor, but technically reports to City Manager Curt Walton.

Walton said in an e-mail to the Observer Friday that "Tracy's employment status is unchanged. Any performance matters with any employee are discussed privately with the employee, not in the media. I will say, however, that Tracy is an extremely talented employee that I look forward to working with for years to come."

Montross, who earns $72,000 a year, was hired as the mayor's special assistant in the summer of 2010. She replaced Kevin Monroe, who left the city to work for the Democratic National Convention Committee. Montross works closely with the mayor, advising him on some policy issues and at times working with the media.

She had previously worked as a scheduler for Democratic Sen. Max Baucus of Montana.
In her email to the mayor, Montross said she was the "principal planner" for the China trip.

City of Charlotte policy calls for employees to be reimbursed only for economy-class tickets. Emails from CIC board members said the group didn't have a specific travel policy.

"Outside agencies are not bound by our policies," Walton said, "although I suspect they are similar."

Charlotte City Council member Michael Barnes, Foxx's fellow Democrat, said the email was "completely inappropriate."

"I don't expect staff to be threatening anyone over their budgets," Barnes said.

The Charlotte Observer story is here.

Cedar's Take:

Is this the perception of our City County Government we want to share with the world in less than 12 months? If this is what we learn months after the fact what kinds of things are we not learning? What kind of shady dealing is his honor Mayor Foxx doing behind closed doors?

Why does our appointed by City Council City Manger offer nothing more than a flippant response to something that speaks volumes as to how our City County Government is being run.

Keep in mind that this is not the first time a member of our City County Government has been cornered after a shake down attempt.

We as citizens would like to think Charlotte is above the politics of Detroit or Chicago. But there is a former Governor in the "Windy City" who is looking at serious jail time because he to thought he was entitled to a better seat on the Obama bus.

Note: The above story is from the Charlotte Observer as noted. Cedar Posts has posted the entire story because the Observer has removed the comment option from their on-line edition, thereby removing the countless calls for Mayor Foxx's resignation and the firing of Tracy Montross.

John Chamberlain, an artist who turned automotive scrap metal into ...

NEW YORK, NY.- Gagosian Gallery announced that John Chamberlain has died on December 21, 2011, in Manhattan.

Brandishing a wicked sense of humor and notoriously ornery, Chamberlain was a larger-than-life personality who was as bold and expressive as his sculptures, photographs, paintings, and films. He was constantly experimenting with new materials and processes over his five-decade long career?including discarded automobile parts, galvanized steel, paper bags, Plexiglas, foam rubber, aluminum foil--revealing a near-constant stream of inventiveness. His recent exhibitions?in Giswil, Switzerland, in 2009 and 2010; at Gagosian Gallery?s New York and London locations in the spring of 2011; and at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munch, Germany, in the summer of 2011-- featured some of the largest and most jubilant sculptures of his career, proving that despite his advancing age, the artist remained fearlessly, relentlessly creative. Chamberlain has been the subject of more than 100 single-person exhibitions around the world, and his first retrospective, at New York?s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 1971, is to be followed by a second retrospective at the same museum in February of 2012.

Larry Gagosian said ?John Chamberlain made an indelible mark on the history of art in the twentieth century. He was a spectacular, roaring figure who embodied the fierceness of mid-century American art and who was unparalleled in his adaptation of unlikely materials for his sculptures. His influence will be long reaching, and his death is a great loss. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.?

Born in 1927 in Rochester, Indiana, Chamberlain briefly studied painting at the Art Institute of Chicago (1951?52), and at the avant-garde Black Mountain College (1955?56), near Asheville, North Carolina, where he credits his time with teachers including poets Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, and Charles Olson among the greatest influences on his work. He rose to prominence in the late 1950s with energetic, vibrant sculptures hewn from disused car parts, achieving a three-dimensional form of Abstract Expressionism that astounded critics and captured the imagination of fellow artists. An inveterate rebel, Chamberlain also violated the formalist prohibition deriding the use of color in sculpture. He chose to adapt uncommon, recycled materials in his work such as the slick, industrial palette of defunct auto bodies.

Chamberlain moved to New York in 1956, where he developed his particular method of assemblage, first using small found metal parts that quickly became larger welded versions of bent and twisted steel. Although he was originally influenced by the compilation methods of David Smith (who also relied on welding found metal parts), Chamberlain?s work soon showed a preference for voluminous and spatial masses. His astonishing, balanced sculptures stressed the deep volumes and eccentric folds that he managed to achieve by squeezing or compressing the metal and then welding the disparate elements into highly developed, collage-like compositions.

Equally conversant in a variety of materials, Chamberlain has not solely restricted his medium to automobile parts. For a seven-year period beginning in 1965, he returned to painting, using an enamel automobile finish to produce highly glossed, small-format square pictures; he ventured into writing and directing 16 mm films; and, fueled by his interest in science, he began an investigation into unusual materials such as urethane foam, aluminum foil, paper bags, and mineral-coated Plexiglas. Later, printmaking and photography (using a wide-angle camera attached at hip level) entered his artistic repertoire.

In addition to Abstract Expressionism, throughout his career, Chamberlain has been associated with both Minimalism and Pop. His works composed of ?crushed automobile parts? in bright colors resonated with America?s fascination with consumer car culture, accordingly aligning him with the contemporary work of many Pop artists whose focus was on the object. On the other hand, for Donald Judd and his compatriots, Chamberlain?s sculptures embodied the neutral, redundant, and expressively structured tenants of Minimalism that sought to remove objectivity, inexpressiveness, and the referential. The attempts to place Chamberlain in such various, conflicting categories acknowledge the artist?s elusiveness and singularity. His tireless pursuit of discovery, his curiosity, and his intuitive process distinguish him as one of the most important American sculptors of our time.

Since returning in the mid-1970s to metal as his primary material, Chamberlain has limited himself to specific parts of the automobile (fenders, bumpers, or the chassis, for example). He has been adding color to??or in some techniques, subtracting color from??the found car parts by dripping, spraying, and patterning on top of existing hues to often-wild effect. This liberation and deep exploration of color reference Vincent van Gogh and Henri Matisse, two artists whose color sense he greatly admires. Beginning in the late 1980s, Chamberlain began using the discarded tops of custom vans, cutting them into long ribbons that he left unfurled, crumpled into undulating bands, or rolled into dense rosettes. The scale of his work increased dramatically at this time, aided in part by a significantly larger studio space in Sarasota, Florida, in 1980, and ultimately on Shelter Island, at the far end of Long Island, where his studio is today.

Over the last three decades, Chamberlain has worked in varying ways within his basic artistic equation, but as his work matured, he has moved toward more aggressive manipulations of form and color and away from crashed-car renown. Perhaps not intentionally, the deep folds of Chamberlain?s sculptures resemble Renaissance drapery studies that imply the underlying presence of a figure, or conversely, a void. His works throughout the 1990s and first years of the twenty-first century became increasingly volumetric, if not baroque, in their massing of form and vibrant color choice. However, in recent years, the artist has embarked on the production of a new body of work that demonstrates a decided return to earlier concerns. Among the largest works he has ever made, these confidently monumental bonfires of metal, with their stacks of mostly horizontal and vertical crushed and rolled metal are drawn from a supply of 1940s and 1950s automobiles. The works? elegant refinements and exponentially complex renderings exemplify his long-held artistic philosophy, ?it?s all in the fit.?

Oil prices slightly higher (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil prices rose Wednesday after an industry group said U.S. crude supplies fell last week and hopes for a stronger economy suggested demand for oil may rise.

Benchmark crude rose 60 cents to $97.83 in New York. Brent crude was up 4 cents at $106.77 in London.

The American Petroleum Institute said crude inventories fell 4.6 million barrels last week. Analysts surveyed by Platts predicted a drop of 2.3 million barrels.

The Energy Department releases its weekly report on petroleum supplies Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday benchmark crude rose more than 3 percent on encouraging U.S. economic data.

Demand for crude in the U.S. has fallen as drivers cut back amid high prices and a weak economy.

Retail gasoline prices were little changed at a national average of $3.21 per gallon.

Syrian troops 'wipe out village'

A shot taken from an amateur video shows Syrian military vehicles in Homs (AP)

Syrian troops have been accused of massacring an entire village with rockets, machine guns and tanks.

They surrounded the unarmed villagers in a valley and killed all those trapped inside - more than 100 people - in a barrage that lasted for hours, a witness and two activist groups said.

The attack on Tuesday pushed the death toll for two days of violence across Syria to more than 200, and was one of the deadliest single events of the entire nine-month uprising against President Bashar Assad.

The offensive targeted the village of Kfar Owaid, about 30 miles from the northern border with Turkey. It is part of the rugged mountainous region of Jabal al-Zawiyah, which has been the scene of clashes between troops and army defectors and intense anti-government protests for weeks.

"It was an organised massacre," said Rami Abdul-Rahman, head of the British-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. "The troops surrounded people then killed them."

One villager who escaped said that scores of people had fled to the nearby Budnaya Valley, where they were completely surrounded by troops. The man, who identified himself only as Abu Rabih for fear of government reprisal, said troops also used bombs filled with nails to increase the number of casualties.

"What happened yesterday was a crime against humanity," he said. He said 110 people were killed in the attack.

Activists said all the victims were unarmed civilians and activists.

Assad agreed on Monday to allow foreign monitors under an Arab League plan aimed at stopping the bloodshed. But the huge toll from the crackdown on Monday and Tuesday has reinforced opposition suspicions that he is just playing for time to stall a new round of international condemnation and sanctions. The crackdown has already left him internationally isolated and under tremendous pressure from the Arab world as well as the west.

The Arab League plan calls for Syria to halt its crackdown, open talks with the opposition, withdraw military forces from city streets and allow in human rights workers and journalists Despite intensified violence, the League appeared to be going ahead with its plans to send the monitors.

Philippine health chief hit for anti-gay comments (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? The Philippine health chief is under attack for suggesting at an AIDS conference that health workers survey homes of gay children and warn their parents about potentially risky behavior.

Health Secretary Enrique Ona said that "parents should rein in their homosexual children and get them tested." He made the remark in a speech at Friday's conference while discussing options for voluntary testing for young people who are most at risk of HIV/AIDS.

The Philippines Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender advocacy group called for Ona's resignation Monday. Ona's office did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Government spokeswoman Abigail Valte said "we do not support any discrimination" but did not comment on the resignation call.

Samsung's two-faced SCH-W999 Android plays the dual core, dual SIM game

Remember Samsung's second-gen dual-screen Android clamshell we spotted about a month ago? Well, here it is at last: announced in partnership with China Telecom, this SCH-W999 flip phone packs two 3.5-inch 480 x 800 Super AMOLED panels back to back, along with a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm MSM8660, Android 2.3 with TouchWiz, HyperSkin back cover (as featured on the Galaxy Nexus for grip plus anti-smear), five megapixel camera, Bluetooth 3.0, WiFi and WAPI (China's not-so-successful take on WiFi, basically).

Like many phones on China Telecom, the W999 comes with dual SIM slots and dual-mode connectivity (GSM and CDMA2000, with the latter offering EV-DO 3G), but with the additional support for penta-band radio for globetrotters. Want to nab one? We're looking at a 2012 launch, though there's no word on prices just yet -- well, just so you know, the predecessor W899 starts from ¥8990 ($1,410), so good luck with your garage sale. We got you some pictures from the China launch event after the break, courtesy of Samsung Mobile.

Obama pushes payroll tax cut extension

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama wants voters to get involved in the debate over extending the reduced payroll tax and he's asking them to tell members of Congress to keep the cut in place.

"Let your members of Congress know where you stand," Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address. "Tell them not to vote to raise taxes on working Americans during the holidays. Tell them to put country before party. Put money back in the pockets of working Americans. Pass these tax cuts."

Obama's address directs listeners to the whitehouse.gov website, where an online calculator lets them determine how much money it's worth to them to continue the 2 percent reduction in the payroll tax that took effect this year. A family with income of $50,000 a year would pay $1,000 more in payroll taxes if Congress does not act by the end of this year to extend that reduction.

Democrats want to expand the reduction in addition to extending it. Republican leaders say they're committed to passing an extension, fearing political fallout if payroll taxes rise on Jan. 1 on 160 million wage-earners. The GOP rank-and-file appears divided, with many Republican senators voting against an extension supported by their leadership this week.

There's also disagreement about how or whether to pay for any extension. Democrats favor a new tax on millionaires; Republicans prefer to cut federal spending.

"We're going to keep pushing Congress to make this happen. They shouldn't go home for the holidays until they get this done," Obama said in his address. "And if you agree with me, I could use your help."

Obama also took note of a new monthly jobs report out Friday that showed the economy added 120,000 jobs in November, a positive number. "We need to keep this growth going and strengthen it," the president said.

Republicans devoted their weekly address to promoting a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, which is headed for a vote in the Senate after failing in the House last month.

Democratic leaders worked aggressively to defeat the measure in the House, saying that such a requirement could force Congress to cut billions from social programs during times of economic downturn and that disputes over what to cut could result in Congress ceding its power of the purse to the courts. The result was that the amendment got majority support but fell short of the two-thirds needed to advance a constitutional amendment.

Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, said "the impending vote to amend the Constitution represents a choice between changing business as usual in Washington or embracing the status quo that we can no longer afford."

"The real reason many lawmakers don't want a balanced budget amendment is the exact reason why it's so essential," Snowe said. "They don't want their hands tied; they want to continue to spend without restraint."

Like Obama, she asked listeners to make their views known.

"Contact your senators and urge them to support our balanced budget amendment," Snowe said, "so that we finally seize the fiscal reins and reclaim our future for our children and our grandchildren."

'Twilight' stays bright but Hollywood snoozes (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? The latest "Twilight" movie cast the longest shadow with $16.9 million for a third-straight No. 1 finish during one of the year's slowest weekends at the box office.

Business was dismal, with box-office tracker Hollywood.com estimating Sunday that domestic revenues totaled just $82 million. That puts it barely ahead of Hollywood's worst haul of the year, when revenues were $81.5 million over the second weekend in September.

Once studios release final numbers Monday, this past weekend could come in as the worst of the year if revenues finish even lower.

The first weekend of December often presents a lull in between big Thanksgiving releases and the onslaught of year-end blockbusters that arrive a bit later. But this big a slowdown is surprising given that there's quality stuff out there among the top-10 films, particularly family fare such as "The Muppets," "Hugo" and "Arthur Christmas."

Hollywood executives usually blame bad weekends on a weak crop of movies.

"It's tough to blame it on the product when the product is pretty good and the films are solid," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "While the post-Thanksgiving weekend is typically slow, it's not usually this slow."

The dreary weekend comes after a relatively quiet Thanksgiving holiday at movie theaters, despite analysts' predictions of potential holiday records because of a great lineup of films.

But more fans might be thinking twice about heading out to theaters given the new entertainment options they have with Apple's iPad, Amazon's Kindle products and other gadgets, along with their big-screen home setups for movies and television.

Or it could be that Hollywood has temporarily neglected its mainstay audience of young males. Dergarabedian said there's little out there now for guys looking for thrills and laughs.

That will change in the coming weeks as Jonah Hill's comedy "The Sitter" opens Friday, followed by a rush of action tales: Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol," Robert Downey Jr.'s "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" and Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin."

Women and families continue to dominate the scanty business at theaters now. Summit Entertainment's female-driven blockbuster "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1" raised its domestic haul to $247.3 million.

Coming in second again was Disney's "The Muppets" with $11.2 million, lifting the family film's domestic total to $56.1 million. Despite good reviews, though, "The Muppets" audience was off more sharply than any other top-10 movie compared to Thanksgiving weekend.

Paramount's family adventure "Hugo," an acclaimed saga directed by Martin Scorsese, finished third with $7.6 million, raising its domestic take to $25.2 million.

Sony's animated holiday comedy "Arthur Christmas" was fourth with $7.4 million, pushing its total to $25.3 million.

In limited release, Fox Searchlight's sexually explicit drama "Shame" opened strongly with $361,181 at 10 theaters in six cities. "Shame" expands to six more cities Friday.

Starring Michael Fassbender in a grim portrait of a sex addict, "Shame" is the latest film angling to lure moviegoers despite an NC-17 rating that prohibits anyone younger than 17 from seeing it.

Some fans and theaters equate the NC-17 tag with pornography, but serious films with that rating occasionally break through and find an audience. Fox Searchlight is positioning "Shame" for Academy Awards attention after the film earned Fassbender the best-actor prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ? Part 1," $16.9 million.

2. "The Muppets," $11.2 million ($1.8 million international).

3. "Hugo," $7.6 million.

4. "Arthur Christmas," $7.4 million.

5. "Happy Feet Two," $6 million.

6. "Jack and Jill," $5.5 million.

7. "The Descendants," $5.2 million.

8. "Immortals," $4.4 million.

9. "Tower Heist," $4.1 million ($4 million international).

10. "Puss in Boots," $3.1 million ($23 million international).
