Bernanke fends off critics left and right

Fed chief Ben Bernanke said he was "dissatisfied" with the pace of the economy's growth.

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

With the economy mired in the worst downturn in decades, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has been taking heat from all sides.

Even as the Federal Reserve issued a gloomier outlook for job growth and the economy, ?Bernanke defended the central banks? latest decision to sit back, watch for more hopeful signs of growth and hope that its 3-year-old, cheap-money policies will eventually kick start a solid recovery.

?As I've said before, I understand that many people are dissatisfied with the state of the economy,? Bernanke told reporters?following a?regular two-day meeting of policymakers. ?I'm dissatisfied with the state of the economy. Unemployment is far too high.?

In an update of economic projections it issued in June, the Fed lowered its growth outlook for the next three years. Gross domestic product is now seen?growing?at just 1.6 percent this year (down from 2.8 percent in the June foredcast) and just 2.7 percent next year (down from 3.9 percent).

The expected?lower growth?prompted the Fed to raise its predictions for the unemployment rate -? to a stubbornly high 8.6 percent by the end of the year, up from a projection of 7.8 percent five months ago. Central bankers now predict that the jobless rate will remain above 7 percent through 2014.

In a 45-minute session with reporters, Bernanke alternated between defending the Fed?s actions since the global financial system collapsed in 2008 and sympathizing with critics who say the Fed hasn?t done enough. But he insisted that Fed policies have made a difference.

?Our best estimates are that, absent the support of monetary policy, that the economy would be in a much deeper ditch and that unemployment would be much higher than it is,? he said

But he conceded that ?the pace of progress is likely to be frustratingly slow."

Some of the criticism has come from the left, including the widening Occupy Wall Street protest movement, which faults the Fed for bailing out bankers who made the risky bets that led to the collapse. Those critics, Bernanke said, don?t fully understand the reasons for the Fed?s massive intervention following the financial meltdown.

"A very simplistic interpretation of that was because we wanted to preserve bankers' salaries,? he said. ?That obviously wasn't the case. What we were doing was trying to protect the financial system in order to prevent a serious collapse of both the financial system and the American economy."

The Federal Reserve chairman responds to a question about Occupy Wall Street, saying he understands frustration with the economy. "I am dissatisfied with the state of the economy," Bernanke said. "Unemployment is too high."

?

Bernanke has also been a target of criticism from the right for dumping trillions of dollars of newly created cash into the economy to blunt the impact of a massive credit contraction in 2008. Several Republican?presidential candidates have attacked that policy on the grounds that it risks promoting runaway inflation. Those criticisms are also misplaced, Bernanke said.

?We have kept inflation close to 2 percent on average, which both has avoided the problems of high inflation, but also very importantly has avoided the risk of deflation we've seen in other countries," he said. ?That deflation can be a very pernicious problem and difficult to get out of once you are there. So we have been able to achieve, on average, stable prices."

In any case, Bernanke said, political opposition to Fed policies would not sway the central bank. Though he acknowledged that the Fed needs to be accountable to Congress, he vowed to continue making policy based economics, not politics.

"Politics is politics, and the Federal Reserve tries to stay nonpartisan,? he said. "Our job is to do the best we can for the U.S. economy, to do what we can to attain our mandate of maximum employment and price stability."

The Fed chairman also noted that the central bank can?t revive economic growth and reduce unemployment by itself, saying ?it would be helpful? if Congress and the White House did more to support job growth. He also noted that the Fed has little control over decisions made by European policy who continue to wrestle with a widening debt crisis that threatens to plunge Europe into another recession.

7 miners rescued from China mine, 50 still trapped (AP)

BEIJING ? Rescuers pulled seven injured miners to the surface Friday and were trying to reach 50 others trapped after a cave-in at a coal mine in central China, state media reported.

Four miners were killed when the cave-in blasted rock into the mine shaft Thursday evening and 14 managed to escape, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The rock explosion happened just after a small earthquake shook near the mine in the city of Sanmenxia in Henan province.

State broadcaster CCTV showed rescuers with helmets and oxygen tanks carrying the seven found alive Friday afternoon from a mine elevator as waiting officials applauded and medical staff rushed to attend to them.

The rescued miners lay on stretchers, wrapped with blankets with their eyes covered by towels to prevent them from being damaged by the sudden exposure to light after hours of being trapped.

Xinhua said six had minor injuries but one was seriously hurt.

At least 200 workers were digging a small rescue tunnel about 1,650 feet (500 meters) deep to try to reach the trapped miners, the People's Daily newspaper said. There have been no reports of communication with the trapped miners.

The mine belongs to Yima Coal Group, a large state-owned coal company in Henan, the State Administration of Work Safety said on its website.

Luo Lin, head of the administration, said a magnitude-2.9 earthquake occurred near the mine shortly before a "rock burst" was reported.

The phenomenon occurs when settling earth bears down on mine walls and causes a sudden release of stored energy. The exploding chunks of coal and rock, or the shock waves alone, can be lethal.

Survival depends on the intensity of the rock explosion and if ventilation can be provided, a local official told The Associated Press.

"If it was not very strong, it might have caused the tunnel to get narrower, but we might still be able to send some air in there to ensure ventilation," said the Yima city Communist Party's head of propaganda, who would give only his surname, Tian, as is common with Chinese officials.

"But if the impact was pretty strong and caused the tunnel walls to collapse, then the ventilation was probably cut off immediately, suffocating the people trapped there," he said.

Tian said it was difficult to determine how deep in the mine the trapped workers were.

According to Xinhua, workers were digging a tunnel about 2,500 feet (760 meters) long, but after the rock burst, the tunnel appeared to have "basically folded" a little more than halfway down the passage, at 1,580 feet (480 meters). It was unclear what the condition of the tunnel was beyond that point, Xinhua said.

China's coal mines are the deadliest in the world, although the industry's safety record has improved in recent years as smaller, illegal mines have been closed. Annual fatalities are now about one-third of the high of nearly 7,000 in 2002.

Last Sunday, a gas explosion at a coal mine in central China's Hunan province killed 29 workers, the worst accident in recent months.

(AP) ? PGA champion Keegan Bradley cares more about counting birdies than votes. He flew halfway around the world with the intention of winning a World Golf Championship, not any kind of an award.

Whatever the case, he sure made this PGA Tour player of the year discussion a lot more interesting Thursday.

Bradley did most of his damage on the par 5s at Sheshan International with three birdies and an eagle, which carried him to a 7-under 65 and a two-shot lead after the one round of the HSBC Champions.

"A very rewarding round," Bradley said.

Bo Van Pelt extended his awesome Asian adventure. Coming off a six-shot win in Malaysia last week, Van Pelt had 67 and was tied for second with the Swedish duo of Alexander Noren and Fredrik Jacobson.

The PGA Tour felt it should wait until after the HSBC Champions to send out its postseason awards ballot because this tournament counts as official if a PGA Tour member were to win. If there was one player considered a threat to Luke Donald as player of the year, it would be Bradley. Winning in Shanghai would give him a tour-leading three victories, including a major and a World Golf Championship.

Bradley only laughed when asked if his opening 65 was enough to make Donald nervous.

"Maybe," he said. "You know, all I'm trying to do is win this golf tournament. I know there's a lot on the line, and there's some awards to be won. I'm sure Luke is not very interested in this tournament. I'm sure he's sleeping. But I hope to keep playing well, and let those fall where they fall."

Donald, the No. 1 player in the world, finished his PGA Tour season in style. He closed with a 64 to win Disney for his second win of the year, giving him the money title and Vardon Trophy for the lowest scoring average. However, he was kept from playing the HSBC Champions because his wife is expecting their second child any day.

The award is determined by the players, who suddenly are paying a lot more attention.

"There's only two people in the race as far as I'm concerned ? Luke and Keegan," Adam Scott said. "If Keegan were to win this week, it's probably a tough decision, but I would vote for Keegan. It's a major, a WGC and a PGA Tour event in his rookie year. That's going to be a better year. A major has to hold some weight, and then you add a World Golf Championship.

"Winning the money title and scoring average is nice and an incredible achievement," Scott said. "But winning tournaments is what it's about. Keegan would have my vote."

Nick Watney said he already has made up his mind. No matter who wins this week, he's voting for Donald.

"I feel as though Luke has earned it," Watney said.

Bradley isn't too wrapped up in the discussion quite yet. He found satisfaction in being the only player in the 78-man field without a bogey. And while his length off the tee was an advantage, he made three birdies on the par 5s with a wedge in his hand. He also had another rookie moment when he found himself in awe of playing alongside Lee Westwood and Scott, even as he outplayed both of them.

"For me, every week I'm amazed at who I'm around," Bradley said. "And to be in a group like that in this tournament, and to play like that on this course is very rewarding and it means a lot to me. ... I know I say this a lot. But I feel like I have to pinch myself out here, because of what's going on and just how much fun I'm having doing it."

It's already been a dream season for the 25-year-old rookie, and it might not be over just yet.

Even so, the last WGC event of the year is just getting started.

David Toms holed out a wedge on the 16th hole for eagle and Justin Rose had two eagles to join the group at 68. Westwood and Scott were each at 69, with Westwook nearly making an albatross when his 5-wood bounced off the pin on the par-5 14th and settled a few feet away for a tap-in birdie.

Rory McIlroy, with Caroline Wozniacki following him inside the ropes, made two late birdies to salvage a 70.

Bradley took advantage with one booming tee shot after another. He opened with a birdie after a wedge to 3 feet on No. 10 and drilled a hybrid 3-iron over the water to 20 feet on the 18th for an eagle. He had three birdies and an eagle on the par 5s, and kept bogeys off his card with a nice up-and-down from the bunker on No. 7 and a two-putt from some 60 feet on his final hole.

Van Pelt got off to a sluggish start and then continued his amazing play in Asia. He won the Asia Pacific Championship last week by six shots, and is 28-under par in his five rounds during this two-week Asian excursion.

McIlroy is coming off a $2 million win last week in the Shanghai Masters exhibition across town at Lake Maleren. There wasn't an immediate carryover, as he three-putted for bogey on the opening hole and twice watched short birdie putts horseshoe around the cup.

Without being here, Donald is a focal point in two respects.

He still figures to get plenty of votes for PGA Tour player of the year, although Bradley could affect that. Donald also is trying to become the first player to win the money title on the PGA and European tours, and he has a $1.8 million lead in Europe over McIlroy.

Despite opening with a 70, McIlroy was only five shots behind with three rounds ahead of him and was not at all discouraged.

"It's a huge event anyway, but for me, it's a big event in the course of the season just because I feel like if I can play well this week, I can eat into Luke's lead a little bit," McIlroy said.

Taylor Swift Considers Lawsuit Over Phony Topless Photo

For the record: Taylor Swift is NOT posing topless anywhere on the Internet. That much is certain.

Over the weekend, however, a site desperate for traffic photoshopped a picture to make it look - to the REALLY untrained eye - as if the singer were propped on her bed, shirt off, smile on her face.

Protective of her reputation, Swift has fired off a letter demanding the site remove the image.

As of this writing, though, it remains live on a URL that bills itself as a "holy Muslim celebrity gossip site" and which has "jihad" in the name. Seriously, it's not even worth linking to. We're not gonna give the owners the pleasure.

Just rest assured, readers, that any headline you see that screams TAYLOR SWIFT TOPLESS is a lie. Thank you.
