CINCINNATIUniversity of Cincinnati (UC) researchers have received a four-year, $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to continue development of a portable sensor that will be used to measure metal levels in humans.


The portable sensor will combine lab-on-a-chip sensing with microfluidics to measure a sample derived from a few droplets of blood for manganese and lead in participants. Such a point-of-care sensor would provide faster results than traditional blood testing methods, be more convenient for study participants and be more environmentally friendly.


Led by Ian Papautsky, PhD, the principal investigator, the research team represents a true collaboration at UC, bringing together investigators from three colleges: Papautsky, an associate professor in the College of Engineering and Applied Science's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Systems; Erin Haynes, DrPH, an assistant professor in the College of Medicine's Department of Environmental Health; and William Heineman, PhD, a professor in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Chemistry.


The sensor will be validated in conjunction with the CARES (Communities Actively Researching Exposure Study) project, a related effort in eastern Ohio communities. Haynes is principal investigator of CARES, a partnership between UC and several communities that is looking at air pollution and its effects on child neurodevelopmentparticularly related to manganese, a neurotoxic metal used widely in the production of steel, aluminum alloys, batteries and fertilizers. The sensor will also test for the presence of lead and cadmium, both of which also have demonstrated health risks.


The CARES research team has 407 participants aged 7 to 9. Subjects participated in several activities designed to test their ability to learn and coordinate their movements. Parents completed questionnaires about their children and samples of hair and blood were collected from the children for analysis. (The blood is currently drawn from a vein, but use of the sensor would involve a single prick such as those used for allergy testing.)


"Providing health care providers and scientists the ability to measure in real time whole blood metals in a clinic or research study setting would be fantastic," says Haynes, adding that it currently takes three to nine months for blood metals results to be returned from the laboratory. "This wait time is unacceptable for study participants who may have high levels of concern about their exposure."


Development of the sensor began with a previous grant from the NIH, intended to encourage exploratory and developmental research, which enabled Papautsky, Haynes and Heineman to demonstrate a proof-of-concept version of the sensor. The new version, the focus of the current effort, will go directly into a USB port, Papautsky says, adding that the team will also explore reducing its size (the sensor itself is about the size of a matchbox cover) and integrating control electronics into a more compact system.


"Our multidisciplinary team has already taken the first steps toward developing the sensor and has demonstrated its feasibility through pilot tests," says Papautsky. "We are now poised to fully develop the sensor system for point-of-care application."


Papautsky is director of the Ohio Center for Microfluidic Innovation at UC, where the sensor is made, and has a long-standing interest in the use of microfabrication techniques and microfluidics to study and solve public health problems. Heineman is an electrochemist whose research interests include sensors and microfluidic systems for chemical analysis.


"This is a real collaborationwe didn't just meet to write the proposal," says Papautsky, noting that his and Heineman's teams meet regularly and also stay in contact with Haynes, who originally brought the idea of the metals sensor to Papautsky. "It's a true research enterprise."


The research team has tested the sensor for safety and effectiveness in existing human blood samples. It aims to test it in the field over the next four years, drawing a subset of participants from the CARES study cohort.


Ultimately, Papautsky says, commercialization is likely, with possible broad use of the sensor in clinic, research and international health care settings.

Over the weekend we learned that actress Elizabeth Berkley was planning to pay homage to her Saved By The Bell days with her performance this week on Dancing with the Stars. Elizabeth and her partner Valentin Chmerkovskiy danced the jive to I’m So Excited by the Pointer Sisters, the very same song she performed to on Saved By The Bell in a very special episode of the show that dealt with drug abuse. Last night, Elizabeth and Val gave the PERFORMANCE OF A LIFETIME! Click the video embedded above to watch the performance in full (including her pre-performance interview). The performance starts at about the 2:35 mark of the video but watch the whole thing, it’s fun. I think she should’ve received a perfect score but … she got robbed.


Elizabeth did make it thru to the next round of the competition. I’m PRAYING TO THE OLD GODS AND THE NEW that her next performance will be an homage to Showgirls. I mean … right? Who wouldn’t want to see Nomi Malone in action again?

Rodgers, Packers squeeze past Ravens 19-17

BALTIMORE (AP) — For much of the afternoon, Aaron Rodgers was ducking oncoming linemen and misconnecting with hurried throws.


When it counted, however, Rodgers came up with the big plays.


Rodgers threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson, Eddie Lacy ran for 120 yards and Mason Crosby kicked four field goals as the Green Bay Packers beat the Baltimore Ravens 19-17 on Sunday.


Rodgers went 17 for 32 for 315 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He played most of the game without two of his top three receivers — James Jones hurt his left knee on a first-quarter play, and Randall Cobb left for good after being struck on his right knee on a tackle by Matt Elam.


And still, Rodgers was magnificent.


His 64-yarder to Nelson gave Green Bay a 16-3 lead late in the third quarter. After the Ravens closed to 19-17 on an 18-yard touchdown catch by Dallas Clark with 2:04 remaining, Rodgers clinched the victory with a 52-yard completion to Jermichael Finley on a third-and-3.


Rodgers completed only seven passes after halftime, yet those plays totaled 199 yards.


"Days like today remind you of why you love this game so much," Rodgers said. "Offensively, we're struggling a little bit, but we found a way to make enough plays to win."


The Ravens (3-3) had won 13 straight at home against NFC foes.


"Aaron made some really good plays out of the pocket in the second half," Baltimore coach John Harbaugh said. "Early, he held it and took some sacks. Later, he held it and found some openings."


Rodgers received ample aid from a depleted defense. Despite playing without injured linebackers Clay Matthews and Brad Jones, the Packers limited Baltimore to 47 yards rushing and registered five sacks, including three by A.J. Hawk.


"It's kind of been our motto for a long time around here: 'Next man up.' We have to make it work," Hawk said. "We had a lot of young guys out there today who really did a good job."


It all added up to Green Bay's first road win following losses at San Francisco and Cincinnati.


"It's important to win on the road in this league if you want to make the playoffs," Rodgers said. "This was a tough environment. This is a team that's defending champs, a football team that's very well-coached, great players on both sides of the ball. This is a great team character-building win."


Green Bay went up 9-0 in the third quarter when Crosby kicked a 50-yard field goal to cap a drive that featured a 43-yard pass play from Rodgers to Jarrett Boykin.


Baltimore answered with its first score, a 23-yard field goal by Justin Tucker following a 59-yard completion from Joe Flacco to rookie Marlon Brown.


Harassed and hurried for much of the afternoon, Rodgers finally came up with a signature moment. He started to his left, then rolled right before lofting a perfect spiral to Nelson, who had gotten behind Lardarius Webb.


Down 16-3, the Ravens began playing with a sense of urgency. Flacco directed a 10-play, 80-yard drive that ended with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jacoby Jones with 11:52 remaining.


Jones, who missed the previous four weeks with a knee injury, finished with two catches for 42 yards and had a 35-yard kickoff return.


Looking to enhance Green Bay's 16-10 lead, Rodgers and the Packers held onto the ball for just over 7½ minutes before Crosby kicked a 31-yard field goal with 4:17 remaining.


It turned out to be the game-winner.


Flacco went 20 for 34 for 342 yards and got no help from the running game — Ray Rice finished with 34 yards on 14 carries and was stuffed three straight times inside the 5 during the second quarter.


"We've got to be better on first and second down," Flacco said.


Baltimore accumulated only 36 yards of offense during the first quarter, zero on the ground.


In the second quarter, a peculiar sequence of events began when Green Bay's Ryan Taylor blocked a punt. The ball bounced beyond the line of scrimmage, was touched by John Kuhn of the Packers and recovered by Baltimore at its own 41-yard line. The Ravens subsequently got a first-and-goal at the Green Bay 4, but four straight runs failed to get the ball into the end zone.


Late in the half, Flacco was sacked and lost the ball. Green Bay's Datone Jones recovered and Crosby connected on a 31-yard field goal as time expired for a 6-0 lead.


Notes: Green Bay leads the series, 4-1. Baltimore's only win was 48-3 in 2005. ... Baltimore placed LT Bryant McKinnie on the inactive list. Eugene Monroe replaced him as a starter and made his Ravens debut. ... Ravens LB Terrell Suggs had his run of five straight games with a sack end. But he had 10 tackles to move into second on the Ravens' career list, behind only Ray Lewis.

Netflix Shares Up 8 Percent After Reports of Talks With Cable Companies


Shares of Netflix surged 8 percent on Monday after reports surfaced that cable operators were considering embedding the video-streamer's service into set-top boxes.



The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with discussions, said Netflix is talking to Comcast and Suddenlink Communications, and Bloomberg later reported talks are underway with Charter Communications and Cox Communications, as well. 


Netflix stock on Tuesday rose $23.51 a share to $324.36 on volume that was more than twice the average.

Presumably, if a deal were to get done in the U.S. it would be similar to an arrangement Neflix recently struck with Virgin Media in the U.K. and Com Hem in Sweden. With those two -- at least initially -- only their subscribers who use TiVo set-top boxes will be able to access a Netflix app.


Netflix's goal, though, is more likely that the app be available on cable boxes in general, therefore making the on-demand streamer more of a partner to multi-systems operators and less a competitor.


"We would love to reduce the friction to the end consumer and to be available via the existing device in the home," Netflix CFO David Wells said this year at an investor conference.

BlackBerry Z30 review


It's not the best time for BlackBerry right now. Between layoffs and quarterly loses, the company is certainly going through a rough patch. The Z30 -- BlackBerry's latest attempt at turning things around -- features a 5-inch Super AMOLED display (making it the biggest BB10 device yet), along with 2GB of RAM and a CPU clocked at 1.7GHz. The phone is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, but buggy software, a poor camera and an expensive price tag keep it off of our must-buy list. Read on for more.

We've already seen Valve's Steam Controller in stills, but today we got the chance to watch the new device in action. The video above demos a number of games, including Portal 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The former of those two titles employees the controller's dual touchpads as thumbsticks which looks to be a bit cumbersome. In the other game we saw the controller's ability for precision, but ultimately we'd like to get a better idea of using the controller in a more rigorous match. World Bank sees Afghan economic growth tumbling 10 percent in 2013


KABUL (Reuters) - Afghan economic growth, largely reliant on international aid and security spending, will tumble more than 10 percent this year as foreign troops withdraw and endemic corruption and violence sap development, the World Bank said.


Afghanistan ranks among the most corrupt nations in the world and international aid donors have threatened to cut funds unless there is a crackdown.


Norway has already announced a reduction in its planned aid over Kabul's failure to tackle graft and violence against women.


President Hamid Karzai's government also faces a deteriorating security situation ahead of elections next April that is hindering plans to develop Afghan natural resources, the World Bank said in its South Asia Economic Focus report.


"Afghanistan sticks out in terms of the size of its slowdown... mainly driven by increased uncertainty stemming from the political and security transition," the report said.


"Continued violence, economic crime and systemic corruption also have undermined progress."


Economic growth is expected to reach 3.1 percent this year and 3.5 percent in 2014, down sharply from 14.4 percent in 2012, the report said.


In a major blow to Afghan hopes for economic independence, Chinese investors have demanded a review of a landmark three billion dollar deal to produce copper amid security concerns.


A smaller but symbolically important oil project in northern Afghanistan has also ground to a halt.


The government's failure to improve tax collection is also a major factor behind the weakening economy, the World Bank said.


At a donors' conference in Tokyo last year, the Karzai government promised to increase tax revenues by about five percent to 15 percent of national output by 2016.


"The current decline in revenue therefore poses risks not only to long-term fiscal sustainability but also to the achievement of the Tokyo... targets," the report said.


Delegates from 80 nations and international organisations pledged in Tokyo 16 billion dollars in aid over four years, but tied the funding to a much stronger effort to combat corruption.


Another threat to growth is a deteriorating outlook for agriculture, a key sector which accounts for a quarter of the Afghan economy and which benefited from an especially strong harvest last year.


Most foreign forces are due to withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014, leaving security entirely in the hands of Afghan forces.


Rising casualties among the Afghan forces and a high desertion rate have cast doubt over their ability to manage on their own.
