Boeing to build spacecrafts at shuttle hangar

(AP) ? Boeing will announce an agreement with Space Florida on Monday to lease the hangar that housed the space shuttles to build similar craft that will bring people and cargo to space.

The deal with the state's space agency will create 140 jobs in the next 18 months and 550 jobs by 2015 in an area that's lost jobs as the space shuttle program was retired earlier this year, according to Gov. Rick Scott's office and President Barack Obama's administration.

"Florida has five decades of leadership in the space industry, which makes our state the logical place for the next phase of space travel and exploration," Scott said in prepared remarks obtained by The Associated Press. "Boeing's choice of Florida for its Commercial Crew program headquarters is evidence Florida has the world-class facilities and workforce expertise needed for aerospace companies to succeed."

Likewise, the Obama administration praised the agreement between the Chicago-based Boeing and Space Florida.

"The next era of space exploration won't wait, and so we can't wait for Congress to do its job and give our space program the funding it needs. That's why my administration will be pressing forward, in partnership with Space Florida and the private sector, to create jobs and make sure America continues to lead the world in exploration and discovery," Obama said in prepared remarks obtained by The Associated Press.

The reusable space capsules will be able to bring up to seven people into space. Right now, the United States doesn't have a way to transport people or cargo to the International Space Station.

Since phasing out the space shuttle program earlier this year, NASA is relying entirely on Russia to get American and other astronauts to the space station.

Obama's administration is criticizing Congress for not approving his request for $40 million in economic assistance for the region and $850 million for the Commercial Crew project.

"Neither NASA nor the Space Coast can afford to stand still. We must be aggressive in pursuing this next generation of space exploration ? and the jobs and innovation that will accompany it," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said in prepared remarks.

Scott, however, is criticizing the Obama administration for letting NASA's manned space program lapse.

"Our country is now completely dependent on Russia for travel to and from space. A private business would never let any part of its operations be dependent on someone else. Fortunately, the space transportation systems being developed by private companies like Boeing will rocket the United States back to forefront of the space industry and help reignite job growth," Scott said in his remarks.

A close call goes to the Cardinals in the fifth inning.

With first base open, Texas intentionally walked David Freese to load the bases with two outs. Scott Feldman fell behind 3-1 on Yadier Molina, then threw a strike. The full-count pitch also looked like a strike, right on the outside corner, but this time Feldman didn't get the call from plate umpire Jerry Layne.

Ball four, 4-2 Cardinals.

Hard to argue with walking Freese in that spot, even though Molina has a clutch pedigree. Freese has just been on such a tear lately, especially in big situations.

C.J. Wilson came on and hit Rafael Furcal with his first pitch, forcing in another run. Skip Schumaker strikes out to end the inning.

St. Louis leads 5-2.

Texas pitchers have issued 40 walks in the World Series, tying the record set by the 1997 Florida Marlins.

___

Allen Craig makes a leaping catch at the left-field fence in the sixth, probably taking a home run away from Nelson Cruz. Chris Carpenter works a 1-2-3 sixth, and the Cardinals are nine outs from their second World Series championship in six seasons.

___

Big sequence in the top of the fifth inning.

Ian Kinsler hit a leadoff single and was sacrificed to second by Elvis Andrus. Carpenter fell behind 3-1 on Josh Hamilton ? the only strike may have been a generous call. Hamilton then swung at an inside pitch that might have been ball four and lofted a foul popup wide of third. Freese caught it at the dugout railing for the second out.

Freese had a similar chance Thursday night but was unable to make the play.

Michael Young struck out to end the inning.

Feldman has replaced Texas starter Matt Harrison in the bottom of the fifth. The Cardinals still lead 3-2.

___

Harrison worked a scoreless fourth. He pounded Skip Schumaker in on the hands, shattering his bat on a groundout, and retired Carpenter on an easy fly with runners at second and third to end the inning.

Furcal, dropped from his leadoff spot to seventh in the lineup, is 2 for 2 with a pair of singles.

___

Craig hits his third home run of the World Series to give St. Louis a 3-2 lead after three innings.

Craig's opposite-field fly to right appeared to carry and carry before landing in the Cardinals' bullpen as St. Louis relievers danced with glee.

Wilson is warming up again for Texas, with Harrison due up third in the fourth inning.

___

With runners at the corners in the second, Carpenter retired Andrus on a comebacker to end the inning.

Carpenter is the first pitcher to make three starts in one World Series since Curt Schilling for Arizona in 2001. Carpenter, who beat Texas 3-2 in Game 1 and took a no-decision in Game 5, is 6-0 at home in his postseason career. His eight career postseason wins tie him with Yankees closer Mariano Rivera for most among active pitchers.

___

Harrison looked more comfortable in the second. He was helped out when Young made a nice stretch at first to complete a double play.

Score tied at 2 in the bottom of the third inning.

___

Back and forth again.

Texas scored twice in the top of the first inning, only to have the Cardinals tie it right away on Freese's two-run double to left-center in the bottom half.

What a run for Freese! Two-run triple Thursday night to tie it with two outs in the ninth inning, followed by his homer in the 11th to win it. All after the hometown kid (Freese grew up in a St. Louis suburb) was MVP of the NL championship series.

Molina flied out to the center field fence to end the inning, with Hamilton making a nice catch to keep it tied at 2.

Hamilton and Young had RBI doubles in the first off Carpenter.

Harrison got into trouble with consecutive two-out walks to Albert Pujols and Lance Berkman. Wilson began warming in the bullpen.

___

It didn't take long for the Rangers to make a mistake. Kinsler opened the game with a single, then was promptly picked off first base by Molina, the Cardinals' strong-armed catcher.

Not sure if Kinsler was trying to bluff a stolen base attempt and simply slipped, or if he was really going and felt as though he didn't get a good jump. Either way, he stopped and got caught in between and was picked off pretty easily.

Pained look on manager Ron Washington's face.

But that changed quickly. Andrus walked and Washington was undeterred, putting Andrus in motion on a hit-and-run. Hamilton ripped an RBI double past Pujols at first base and Young fisted a run-scoring double inside the right field line to make it 2-0 Texas.

That was all Carpenter allowed. He struck out Adrian Beltre and retired Nelson Cruz on a groundout.

___

Game 7 of the World Series. The most exciting night in baseball.

Except for last night, that is. What could possibly top that?

Following one of the most thrilling finishes in postseason history, the Rangers and Cardinals are back at it tonight, less than 20 hours after Freese's 11th-inning homer for St. Louis pushed the Series to the limit.

Truly, a Fall Classic.

Winner takes all tonight. First pitch is 8:05 p.m. EDT at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals seem to have everything on their side ? momentum, history and their No. 1 pitcher on the mound. After much debate about what manager Tony La Russa would do, Carpenter is set to start on three days' rest for the second time in his career.

The first time was Game 2 of the NL division series in Philadelphia, and that one didn't go very well. But the 36-year-old right-hander says he learned a few things about how to handle pitching on short rest.

The home team has won eight straight Game 7s in the World Series, a streak started by the Cardinals in 1982 against Milwaukee. This is the first time the Series has gone the distance since 2002, when the Angels beat San Francisco.

Harrison gets the ball for Texas. Let down by his defense, he was pulled in the fourth inning of a Game 3 defeat.

Twice, the Rangers were one strike away from their first World Series championship Thursday night. They couldn't nail it down.

Now, after such a painful defeat, can they possibly recover? The last team to win Game 7 of the World Series on the road was the Pittsburgh Pirates at Baltimore in 1979.

Almost lost in all the back-and-forth excitement Thursday night were injuries to several key players. Cruz strained his right groin and Mike Napoli twisted his left ankle, but both Rangers sluggers are in the Game 7 lineup.

Matt Holliday, however, was removed from the St. Louis roster with a bruised right wrist. Craig starts in left field in place of Holliday.

La Russa also dropped a slumping Furcal to seventh in the lineup and Schumaker to eighth. Second baseman Ryan Theriot is at the top of the order and Craig bats second in front of Pujols.

Holliday's absence might not be such a terrible thing for the Cardinals at this stage.

Sure, it shortens their lineup. He's a dangerous hitter and a legitimate All-Star. But he really struggled with his swing during the World Series (.158) and he hurt the Cardinals with his glove and on the bases in Game 6, too.

With Holliday out, Freese moves up to fifth in the lineup, perhaps providing better protection for Pujols and Berkman. Freese has been a clutch hitter throughout the postseason, never more so than Thursday night.

Speedy outfielder Adron Chambers, a rookie, replaced Holliday on the active roster. Fox sideline reporter Ken Rosenthal says Chambers was grabbing a bite to eat with his girlfriend at a TGI Friday's when he saw the scroll on television saying he'd been added to the roster for Game 7. That's how he found out.

Clear skies at Busch Stadium. The temperature is 51 degrees, with a little light wind.

All set to play ball.

Freeze Candles to Make them Last Twice as Long [MacGyver Tip]

Freeze Candles to Make them Last Twice as LongIf you burn a lot of candles, you probably find yourself buying new ones pretty often, not to mention cleaning melted wax out of the bowls. Here's a trick that'll make them last nearly twice as long.

Home-centric weblog Apartment Therapy explains:

Candles will last longer (almost 2X), if they are placed in the freezer for a day before using them. Chilling the wax gives it a bit longer before burning through and leaving you with an empty jar. For some candles this will also cause them to drip less and burn straight down without burning through the side of the candle.

In addition, they mention, you can even throw them in the freezer after you've used them to make cleaning up that residual wax super easy! Hit the link to read more. Photo by Lars Christopher N?ttaasen.

Zach Galifianakis Puss in Boots Interview

zach-galifianakis

In the animated feature Puss in Boots, spun off from the popular Shrek franchise, actor Zach Galifianakis voices Humpty Alexander Dumpty, an odd egg who grew up in the same orphanage with Puss (Antonio Banderas) until the friends had a falling out. When the two damaged characters cross paths again years later, they team up, with the help of Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek), to continue their childhood quest for the fabled magic beans, in order to grow a beanstalk that will lead them to the goose that lays the golden eggs.

At the film?s press day, Zach Galifianakis spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about playing the famous nursery rhyme character with a snazzy wardrobe, having no idea where his middle name comes from, how director Chris Miller really helped him shape his voice performance, how blown away he is by the finished look of the film, and that he would do voice-over work again, in a heartbeat. He also talked about starting rehearsals for the political comedy Dog Fight after Halloween, how much he?s looking forward to working with Will Ferrell and getting to shave his beard for the role, that he?s heard they?re writing a script for The Hangover 3 (which the cast is all interested to read) but knows nothing more of the film?s status than that, that he?s hoping to continue for a Season 4 of his HBO series Bored to Death, and that he will be doing more episodes of Between Two Ferns, if he can get guests to show up without their publicists. Check out what he had to say after the jump:

zach_galifianakis_image__1_Question: Could you ever have imagined that you?d actually get to play Humpty Dumpty, in your career?

ZACH GALIFIANAKIS: I never did. I haven?t thought about Humpty Dumpty, ever. It?s still an overweight character, even in animation. ?Oh, you?re playing an overweight egg.? ?Oh, great.?

At least he has a stylish wardrobe, though.

GALIFIANAKIS: Somebody said he looks like he?s part of the Steampunk movement, and I thought that was funny. He?s pretty snazzy. I like his look. It?s a good look, for an egg.

Where do you think his middle name, Alexander, came from?

GALIFIANAKIS: I have no idea! It?s ridiculous that I have not asked that question. I didn?t want to sound stupid and ask, ?Where did he get this name?,? and have someone say, ?It?s from the fairy tale!? That?s what I feared. It?s a proper middle name, for a ridiculous first and last name. I like it. It makes sense.

Because you?re voicing an egg, was the character just totally open to how you wanted to interpret it and what kind of personality you wanted to give him?

GALIFIANAKIS: When I got the job, I asked questions like, ?Do you want me to change my voice? Is there a certain accent you want me to do?? And, they were like, ?No, just talk.? I was like, ?Oh, I guess I sound like an egg, in real life. I didn?t realize.? You amp it up a little bit, for storytelling purposes. But, (director) Chris Miller really is the one that developed the character. Since you really don?t see what else is going on, you have to trust that the director knows exactly what he needs. To be honest with you, sometimes directors don?t know, but he did, and thank goodness. My confidence, at first, was not that great, just like with anything that I do, but he made me feel at home and comfortable. After the first couple of sessions, you really get into a nice little warm pattern. He came up with it. I just brought my voice. You improv, here and there, but I don?t know how many they used in the movie ?cause it?s a kids? movie and I probably just went off the rails a little bit.

What did you think when you finally saw what it would look like? Do you see yourself in it at all, or does it feel very separate from you?

Puss-in-Boots-imageGALIFIANAKIS: It doesn?t feel like me too much. But, I may have been getting lost in the animation because I was so impressed with the facial movements and the physicality. The real hard workers of these kinds of movies are the animators ? the people who somehow translate, through their mind and through their hand, what you have done with your voice. That transference is what I?m amazed by. You can go record your voice and give it some inflection, here and there, but it?s the animators that are the real storytellers here. I?m just blown away by it. It?s a pretty movie.

Now that you?ve had this experience, do you want to do more voice-over work?

GALIFIANAKIS: I would do it in a heartbeat. I really had so much fun. Every time I left the recording, I just was in the best mood. Not a lot of jobs, in general, do you leave your job and feel like it?s really easy and fun. I?d love to do it again. The thing is that this was exceptionally easy because I wasn?t doing a wacky voice. I was just doing my voice, so it made it really easy.

What?s the status of Dog Fight? Are you already in production on that?

GALIFIANAKIS: We start rehearsal after Halloween, and then we start shooting. We?re getting ready to start shooting that. It?s a political movie, set in the South, about two guys running for Congress ? Will Ferrell and myself. It?s a movie about how the sausage of politics is made, and is a heightened reality of the real political world, which is, within itself, completely absurd. I?m really looking forward to it. Jay Roach is directing it, and Will is a really nice person. He?s a gentleman. I can?t wait to start working on it. We?re not playing our usual stuff, which is good. And, I will get to shave, thank god.

Hangover_2_The_Hangover_Part_2_posterDo you think The Hangover 3 is going to happen? Have you heard any updates on that?

GALIFIANAKIS: I have heard that they are writing it. That?s all I know. I know that they?re writing it, and I know that we are all wanting to read the third one. Whether we do the third one or not is still up in the air. That?s all I?ve got on that one. It really is.

How do you feel the third season of Bored to Death is, compared to the first two?

GALIFIANAKIS: Well, I think there?s more intertwining of the three guys than there was in the first episodes. The main difference is just that the fabric of the show is more intertwined than it was before. Before, it seemed like we all had our story points, but now they seem to be more mingled with each other. My character moves in with Ted Danson?s character. It?s the most fun show I?ve worked on. I have to say that I love working on it. I hope it comes back. I don?t know the status of that either. I?m out of the loop about everything.

Do you just wait for the phone call?

GALIFIANAKIS: No, I don?t even do that! I don?t even think about it. I?m like, ?Oh, yeah, that?s right, I?m on a show called Bored to Death.?

bored to death sliceIs it fun for you to get to explore a character for a longer period of time, with the TV show?

GALIFIANAKIS: Yeah. The thing with that character, Ray Hueston, is that I can be like that, in real life. I can be that curmudgeon. It?s funny to be sour. I do it as a put-on, in my real life. I do it as a character, in my real life. I love playing a curmudgeon. I just love playing a sour guy. Now that it?s in its third season, you do get to sit with it more and you know exactly how to act, and the writers know how to write better than they did for the first season because there?s a history established. That?s why I don?t want the show to go away. I think that we?re all in a groove and we don?t want to stop dancing. Did I really say that? Jesus! It?s one of those TV shows where the ratings probably aren?t that high, but the critics like it. To me, I would rather be involved with a show like that, then some mega-huge success thing.

Will you be doing any more episodes of Between Two Ferns?

between-two-ferns-zach-galifianakis-tila-tequila-jennifer-aniston-01GALIFIANAKIS: I will be, if I can get the guests to agree to do it without asking me so many fucking questions. I?m like, ?Just show up! We shoot these in a garage. Don?t bring your people. Just show up, like a human being. Don?t bring your make-up people. Just show up.? And, most of them have. They all do. It?s the coolest thing to have Charlize Theron show up and just sit on a rock with you and go, ?So, what is this?? That?s the attitude I like, not publicists asking me all these questions. It?s hard to find people like that.

But, don?t they end up having more fun, when they show up without all of that?

GALIFIANAKIS: Yes! We?re not pranking anybody. Everybody is cool. No offense against the publicity world.

Statin therapy fails to slow progression of atherosclerosis in pediatric lupus patients, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 27, 2011) ? Atorvastatin therapy was found to be ineffective in reducing atherosclerosis progression in children and adolescents with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Results of the Atherosclerosis Prevention in Pediatric Lupus Erythematosus (APPLE) Trial, now available in Arthritis & Rheumatism, a journal published by Wiley-Blackwell on behalf of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), report that the statin therapy did trend toward positive effect of treatment and may benefit patients with more severe SLE who were not included in the trial.

The ACR reports that SLE affects 322,000 adult Americans. Exact figures for pediatric SLE cases are difficult to establish, but the best estimate is that 5,000 to 10,000 children in the U.S. have lupus (Lehman 1996). One of the long-term complications of SLE for both adult and pediatric patients is accelerated atherosclerosis -- a build-up of plaque in the aterial wall which can lead to heart attack and stroke. Medical evidence reports that SLE patients are up to 8 times more likely to develop premature coronary heart disease, compared to the general population. Women with lupus are 50 times more likely to have a heart attack than healthy premenopausal women.

"The prognosis for pediatric lupus patients has significantly improved over the last few decades, however diagnosis at an earlier age subjects these patients to greater cardiovascular risk from systemic disease activity and treatment side effects over a longer time period," explains lead investigator, Dr. Laura Schanberg with the Department of Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. Previous studies show children with SLE have more severe organ damage, and longer exposure to illness and potentially toxic treatments compared with adults.

Prevalence of atherosclerosis in pediatric SLE is unknown, but precursors of the disease such as thickening of aterial artery walls as measured by carotid intima-media thickening (CIMT), have been reported. Statins have been shown to reduce atherosclerosis progression in adults, but have not been investigated in a pediatric SLE population. The APPLE Trial assessed 36-month therapy with atorvastatin, commercially known as Lipitor?, in 221 SLE patients between 10 and 21 years of age at 21 sites in North America. Participants were randomized, with 113 receiving treatment with atorvastatin and 108 a placebo at 10 or 20 mg/day (depending on weight). Researchers determined effectiveness of therapy by progression CIMT as measured by ultrasound.

"Our results demonstrate no significant effect on progression of atherosclerosis in children and adolescents with SLE who were treated with atorvastatin use over the 3-year period," concluded Dr. Christy Sandborg from Stanford University School of Medicine in California and co-primary investigator of the Apple Trial. "Further study of subgroups of SLE patients that may benefit from statin therapy is warranted." While ineffective in reducing progression of atherosclerosis in this study population, atorvastatin was determined to be safe and well tolerated.

In a related editorial also published in Arthritis & Rheumatism, Dr. Angelo Ravelli from the Universit? degli Studi di Genova and Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico in Italy said, "Although the APPLE Trial found atorvastatin to be ineffective in pediatric SLE patients with low to moderate disease activity, a trend toward positive effect was detected. This indicates that while statin therapy may not be necessary in all SLE patients, preventative statin therapy may benefit those with more severe disease activity." Post-hoc subgroup analyses of the APPLE Trial are underway which may uncover those patient groups who may benefit from treatment with atorvastatin.

Madonna burglar sent to psychiatric hospital (AP)

LONDON ? A judge has ordered a stalker who twice broke into Madonna's homes to indefinite detention in a psychiatric hospital.

Grzegorz Matlok was charged with burglary in March after breaking into the singer's London mansion while she was in the United States.

Prosecutors said the 30-year-old had previously been deported to Poland after breaking into Madonna's rural home in southern England, but returned to Britain. When arrested, he told police Madonna had given him permission to stay at her house.

In a victim impact statement, Madonna said she did not know Matlok and felt "alarmed and distressed by the actions of the defendant."

Judge Deborah Taylor sentenced Matlok Monday at London's Southwark Crown Court to hospital treatment, and barred him from contacting Madonna.

EU official: banks agree 50 pct cut on Greek debt (AP)

BRUSSELS ? Private investors agreed Thursday morning to accept losses of 50 percent on their Greek bonds, a European Union official said, removing the last apparent roadblock to a broad plan to solve the continent's debt crisis.

The deal with private creditors would significantly cut Greece's debt load, the very problem that kicked off the eurozone's debt drama almost two years ago.

At an emergency summit in Brussels, European leaders had already agreed to force banks to raise euro106 billion ($148 billion) by June ? partially to ensure they could weather the expected losses on Greek debt.

They also neared agreement on boosting the firepower of the continent's bailout fund to around euro1 trillion ($1.4 trillion) to help it protect larger economies like Italy and Spain from the sort of market pressures that pushed Greece to need a rescue.

While the breakthrough on Greece, the bailout fund and strengthening the banks was a big success for the eurozone, much of the effectiveness of the plans will depend on the details, which will have to be finalized in the coming days and weeks.

The leaders were under immense pressure to finally get a grip on the eurozone's escalating debt crisis after multiple delays and half-baked solutions. Market confidence was waning and fears were growing that the crisis could push Europe and much of the developed world back into recession.

But the third prong of their plan ? finding a way to reduce Greece's crushing debts, which are on track to top 180 percent of economic output ? had been proving difficult, driving leaders, national finance experts and bank representatives to continue talks deep into the night.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel told lawmakers in Berlin that the goal was to bring Greece's debt down to 120 percent of economic output by 2020.

There were concerns that that would require losses that the banks weren't willing to take on voluntarily. Having a voluntary deal is important because imposing losses on banks can trigger massive bond insurance payments that risk creating huge turmoil on global financial markets.

A European official said early Thursday that a voluntary deal had been reached.

Another official confirmed that the banks agreed to take losses of 50 percent of their Greek bonds. According to Greece's debt inspectors that would take the country's debt to just above 120 percent by 2020.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity pending an official statement.

A spokesman for the organization that has negotiated on behalf of the banks said he would release a statement soon, without confirming the deal.

Spend a few hours with Zack Ryder, and you?re bound to hear him profess his love for Slimer and The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man nearly as often as he waxes poetic about tanning, fist pumping and Justin Bieber. Director Ivan Reitman?s Ghostbusters was a major part of the self-professed Internet Champion?s childhood, and Ryder?s fascination with the 1984 supernatural comedy has hardly dissipated over time. Even though he?s sporting ring gear a lot more often than his plastic toy proton pack ? at least in public ? Long Island Iced Z is as passionate about Ghostbusters as he was as a Broski-in-training growing up on Long Island, N.Y.

In the spirit of Halloween, Ryder spoke with WWE.com about his upcoming Ghostbusters-themed episode of ?Z! True Long Island Story,? his lifelong obsession with the film and which Superstars he would want on his team of ?Ghostbroskis.??

WWE.COM: You?re not shy about your Ghostbusters fandom. What is it about the film that you love so much?

ZACK RYDER: I saw it for the first time when I was very young, as a kid, chasing ghosts and busting ghosts looked so fun. Then as I grew up I got all the jokes, and I loved it on a different level. Now, it?s my favorite movie of all time.

1144771347001|01:31WWE.COM: Keen-eyed members of the WWE Universe have noticed a Mattel ?Retro-Action? Real Ghostbusters action figure making cameo appearances on ?Z! True Long Island Story.? How big is your Ghostbusters collection?

RYDER: I have all of the new Mattel Ghostbusters action figures, and they?re awesome. I had the Kenner ones as a kid, and I think I?m going to be a Ghostbuster for Halloween this year. So I?m pretty excited about that.

WWE.COM: How often do you pump your fists to Ray Parker Jr.?s Ghostbusters tune?

RYDER: Pretty often. It?s on my iPod. I even have the instrumental version! I listen to it at least a couple of times a week, ?cuz I?m planning for my next ?Z! True Long Island Story,? which will actually have a Ghostbusters theme. So I?m working on something big for all of my YouTube Broskis out there.

WWE.COM: Speaking of Broskis, what would Slimer have to do to become ?Broski of the Week??

RYDER: He can?t really take care or spike his hair, but he ingests a lot of protein. So if he?s fist pumping and getting that protein in, I think he?ll do alright.

WWE.COM: We know your reputation with the ladies. Which Ghostbusters girl would you rather take to the club: Dana (Sigourney Weaver) or Janine (Annie Potts)?

RYDER: Janine?s pretty hot. She?s got those glasses and I wouldn?t say she?s a nerd, but I think when she takes those glasses off, she gets a little wild.

WWE.COM: What?s your take on Ghostbusters 2: Lackluster or underrated?

RYDER: I think it?s underrated, and it?s one of my favorites for sure. I liked it. I was definitely bummed out that there wasn?t a third.

WWE.COM: Well, there?s been a lot of talk about Ghostbusters 3 going into production. What role do you think you could play in such a film?

RYDER: I think I?d be an additional Ghostbuster, because you have to go with the original four (Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson). You can?t do it without them. I?ll be a rookie Ghostbuster. That?s cool with me.

WWE.COM: And what makes you an ideal candidate to be a Ghostbuster?

RYDER: I have the Tobin?s Spirit Guide, I know the facts and I?m always ready to bust some ghosts.

Assange: Financial blockade may close WikiLeaks

(AP) ? WikiLeaks ? whose spectacular publication of classified data shook world capitals and exposed the inner workings of international diplomacy ? may be weeks away from collapse, the organization's leader warned Monday.

Although its attention-grabbing leaks spread outrage and embarrassment across military and diplomatic circles, WikiLeaks' inability to overturn the block on donations imposed by American financial companies may prove its undoing.

"If WikiLeaks does not find a way to remove this blockade we will simply not be able to continue by the turn of the new year," founder Julian Assange told journalists at London's Frontline Club. "If we don't knock down the blockade we simply will not be able to continue."

As an emergency measure, Assange said his group would cease what he called "publication operations" to focus its energy on fundraising. He added that WikiLeaks ? which he said had about 20 employees ? needs an additional $3.5 million to keep it going into 2013.

WikiLeaks, launched as an online repository for confidential information, shot to notoriety with the April 2010 disclosure of footage of two Reuters journalists killed by a U.S. military strike in Baghdad.

The Pentagon had claimed that the journalists were likely "intermixed among the insurgents," but the helicopter footage, which captured U.S. airmen firing on prone figures and joking about "dead bastards," unsettled many across the world.

The video was just a foretaste. In the following months, WikiLeaks published nearly half a million secret military documents from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a whole the documents provided an unprecedented level of detail into the grueling, bloody conflicts. Individually, many raised concerns about the actions of the U.S. and its local allies ? for example by detailing evidence of abuse, torture and worse by Iraqi security forces.

Although U.S. officials railed against the disclosures, claiming that they were putting lives at risk, it wasn't until WikiLeaks began publishing a massive trove of 250,000 U.S. State Department cables late last year that the financial screws began to tighten.

One after the other, MasterCard Inc., Visa Europe Ltd., Bank of America Corp. Western Union Co. and Ebay Inc.'s PayPal stopped processing donations to WikiLeaks, starving the organization of cash as it was coming under intense political, financial and legal pressure.

Assange said Monday that the restrictions ? imposed in early December ? had cut off some 95 percent of the money he believes his organization could have received.

WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson defended the estimate as "conservative," noting that in 2010 the average monthly donation to WikiLeaks had been more than 100,000 euros ($140,000), while in 2011 the amount had fallen to between 6,000 and 7,000 euros.

Each company has given its own explanation for the blockade, expressing some level of concern over the nature of the secret-spilling site. But WikiLeaks supporters often point out that MasterCard and Visa still process payments for fringe groups such as the American KKK or the far-right British National Party and that neither WikiLeaks nor any of its staff have been charged with any crime.

Assange said his group was being subjected to corporate censorship, a sentiment backed by Dave Winer, a visiting scholar at New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute.

"This was done without due process, without any charges, and has been in place since December last year," he said in a blog post about the blockade. "If I want to give $100 to WikiLeaks, and if I want to use my credit card to do so, who are they to say I can't?"

WikiLeaks has recently taken steps to work around the blockade, including a series of auctions and moves toward cell phone-enabled donations. Assange said Monday that his group was switching its focus from soliciting small-time donations, which typically net about $25, to getting money from a "constellation of wealthy individuals."

He didn't elaborate, but Assange has several wealthy backers, including Frontline Club founder Vaughan Smith, whose manor house in eastern England has been put at Assange's disposal while he fights extradition to Sweden on sex crime allegations.

A decision on whether to extradite him is expected in the next few weeks. Speaking to journalists after Monday's appearance, Assange put his chances of being extradited without the possibility of appeal at "30 percent."

Also looming in the background is a U.S. grand jury investigation into WikiLeaks' disclosures. Earlier this month a small California-based Internet provider became the second company to confirm it was fighting a court order demanding customer account information as part of the American WikiLeaks inquiry.

WikiLeaks' suspected source, U.S. Army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning, remains in custody at Fort Leavenworth prison in Kansas.

Groundbreaking Held For Sapporo Japan Temple

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Sapporo Japan Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) was held Saturday amidst wind and rain, marking the beginning of the Church?s third temple in Japan and sixth in Asia.

Elder Gary E. Stevenson of the Church?s First Quorum of the Seventy presided at the groundbreaking. He was joined by Elders Michael T. Ringwood and Koichi Aoyagi of the Seventy. Former Japan prime minister Yukio Hatoyama also attended the ceremony.

?I am thankful for this historic groundbreaking?even in this downpour,? Elder Stevenson said. ?Everything today was wet with rain, but the spirit of the saints was not dampened at all. They came with their hearts open and with complete joy as they saw the image of the temple at the groundbreaking ceremony. You could see that their eyes and hearts were just filled with joy to know that they are going to have a house of the Lord on the island.?

Former prime minister Hatoyama expressed gratitude to the Church for its Japan earthquake and tsunami recovery efforts. Hatoyama also praised the church for its focus on strong families.

The Sapporo Japan Temple was first announced at the October 2009 general conference by President Thomas S. Monson. Dedicated in October 1980, the Tokyo Japan Temple was the first temple in Asia.?The Fukuoka Temple was dedicated in June 2000 and became the eighty-eighth temple worldwide.

The Church, which has been in Japan since 1901, has 125,000 Latter-day Saints spread through 286 congregations.

BP gets OK of first post-spill drilling plan in gulf

U.S. regulators on Friday approved BP's new exploration plan, moving the company closer to drilling new wells in the lucrative deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico a year and a half after the biggest offshore oil disaster in U.S. history.

BP will still need to get permits before it begins any drilling outlined in the plan, which is the company's first to be approved since an explosion killed 11 workers and ruptured its Macondo well, spewing millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico last year.

BP's plan includes drilling up to four wells off the coast of Louisiana at more than 6,000 feet under water, deeper than BP's doomed Macondo well, which was in 5,000 feet of water.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said BP's exploration plan meets the stringent standards issued by the government after the massive spill, as well as the additional self-imposed standards BP said it would comply with earlier this year.

"Our review of BP's plan included verification of BP's compliance with the heightened standards that all deepwater activities must meet," said BOEM director Tommy Beaudreau said in a statement.

The exploration plan proposes further appraisal drilling in BP's Kaskida field in the Gulf of Mexico, a 2006 discovery that could hold up to 3 billion barrels of oil. An early appraisal well in 2009 confirmed oil was present in the field.

The field is in the highly touted Lower Tertiary trend in the Gulf of Mexico, a huge 300-mile swath across the basin that is estimated to hold up to 15 billion barrels of oil, the largest oil trend in the U.S. since Alaska's Prudhoe Bay was discovered the late 1960s.

In the days after the BP oil spill, some analysts questioned BP's future in the U.S. offshore drilling arena.

But the government has stressed that BP will go through the same review process as any other company. Last week, a drilling official said BP will not be barred from participating in an upcoming offshore oil and gas lease sale.

Congressman Edward Markey, a vocal critic of BP in the aftermath of the spill, said the government may be welcoming the company back to the Gulf too soon.

"Comprehensive safety legislation hasn't passed Congress, and BP hasn't paid the fines they owe for their spill, yet BP is being given back the keys to drill in the Gulf," Markey, the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources committee, said in a statement.

Battle over body delays Gadhafi's burial

Moammar Gadhafi's blood-streaked body has been stashed in a commercial freezer at a shopping center as Libyans try to keep it away from crowds as they figure out where and when to bury the hated leader.

The Libyan dictator's burial was delayed Friday after bloody images of his last moments raised questions over how exactly he died after being captured wounded, but alive.

Interim government officials also moved ahead on plans to "liberate Libya," announcing "the decision has been taken," an NTC official said.

Story: Did 1980s sitcom predict Gadhafi's death date?

The liberation was moved from Saturday to Sunday in the city of Benghazi, often referred to as the cradle of the revolution that overthrew Gadhafi, and not in the capital Tripoli, interim government officials told Reuters.

Meantime, NATO's top commander said Friday he will recommend the end of the alliance's seven-month mission in Libya.

Adm. Jim Stavridis made the announcement on his Facebook page ahead of a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, the alliance's governing body. The council, which comprises envoys from all 28 member countries, is deciding on when and how to end its bombing campaign in Libya a day after Gadhafi's death.

Public display of fallen leaders' bodies a time-tested tradition

"As (supreme allied commander) I will be recommending the conclusion of this mission to the NAC in a few hours," Stavridis wrote. "A good day for NATO, a great day for the people of Libya."

Burial on hold, bullet to the head
An AP correspondent saw Gadhafi's body on Friday at the shopping center in the coastal city of Misrata, home of the fighters who killed the ousted leader a day earlier in his hometown of Sirte.

The body, stripped to the waist and wearing beige trousers, was laid on a bloodied mattress on the floor of a room-sized freezer where restaurants and stores in the center keep perishables. A bullet hole is visible on the left side of his head and in the center of his chest. Dried blood streaks his arms and head.

Video on Arab television stations showed a crowd of fighters shoving and pulling the goateed, balding Gadhafi, with blood splattered on his face and soaking his shirt after he was dragged from hiding in a drainage pipe, begging for his life.

Gadhafi struggled against them, stumbling and shouting as the fighters pushed him onto the hood of a pickup truck. One fighter held him down, pressing on his thigh with a pair of shoes in a show of contempt.

Fighters propped him on the hood as they drove for several moments, apparently to parade him around in victory.

Video: McCain: Gadhafi should have been tried (on this page)

"We want him alive. We want him alive," one man shouted before Gadhafi was dragged off the hood, some fighters pulling his hair, toward an ambulance.

According to a translation by Britain's Sky News, Gadhafi yelled at the revolutionaries. "What you are doing is not allowed in Islamic law," he reportedly said. "What you are doing is forbidden in Islam!"

'Shut up, dog'
Celebratory gunfire is heard in the video aired by Sky News and at one point a gun is pointed at the dictator's head.

"Do you know right from wrong?" Gadhafi added on the video shortly before he appears to lose consciousness.

"Shut up, dog," one of the former rebels responded.

The video on Sky News later shows a dead Gadhafi being photographed and filmed in the street.

Other footage showed fighters rolling Gadhafi's lifeless body over on the pavement, stripped to the waist and a pool of blood under his head.

His body was then paraded on a car through Misrata, a nearby city that suffered a brutal siege by regime forces during the eight-month civil war that eventually ousted Gadhafi, as crowds in the streets cheered.

Video: Misrata reacts to Gadhafi?s death

Gadhafi's body was being kept in an old meat store in Misrata on Friday.? Reutersreported that a bullet wound was visible through his long, curly hair and bruises and scratch marks were also evident.

'Very disturbing'
The United Nations' human rights office called for a full investigation into Gadhafi's death.

"It is unclear how he died. There is a need for an investigation," U.N. human rights spokesman Rupert Colville told reporters in Geneva.

"It is a fundamental principle of international law that people accused of serious crimes should if possible be tried. Summary executions are strictly illegal. It is different if someone is killed in combat," he added.

Referring to separate cell phone images showing a wounded Gadhafi first alive and then later dead amidst a jumble of anti-Gadhafi fighters after his capture on Thursday, he added: "Taken together, they were very disturbing."

Mohamed Sayeh, a senior member of the governing National Transitional Council, later said that Gadhafi's burial had been delayed until his death can be examined by the International Criminal Court.

Sayeh told The Associated Press that Gadhafi will be buried with respect according to Islamic tradition and will not have a public funeral.

Thunderous celebratory gunfire and cries of "God is great" rang out across Tripoli well past midnight, leaving the smell of sulfur in the air. People wrapped revolutionary flags around toddlers and flashed V for victory signs as they leaned out car windows.

Video: The reign of Moammar Gadhafi (on this page)

Martyrs' Square, the former Green Square from which Gadhafi made many defiant speeches, was packed with revelers.

The death, two months after Gadhafi's ouster, finished off the nearly 42-year regime that had turned the oil-rich country into an international pariah and his own personal fiefdom.

It also thrusts Libya into a new age in which its transitional leaders must overcome deep divisions and rebuild nearly all its institutions from scratch to achieve dreams of democracy.

The NTC has always said it will form a new interim government within a month of liberation and will hold elections within eight months.

Acting Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril, who confirmed Gadhafi's death on Thursday, said he will step down to make way for others to guide the oil-rich North African nation toward democracy.

Slideshow: Conflict in Libya (on this page)

"The forming of the new government is subject to the NTC and I myself will not be part of that new government," Jibril said at a news conference in Tripoli. "I would like to call on Libyans to put aside the grudges and only say one word, which is Libya, Libya, Libya."

Other leaders have fallen in the Arab Spring uprisings, but the 69-year-old Gadhafi is the first to be killed. He was shot to death in his hometown of Sirte, where revolutionary fighters overwhelmed the last of his loyalist supporters Thursday after weeks of heavy battles.

President Barack Obama told the Libyan people: "You have won your revolution."

Immigrants To Wells Fargo: Stop Investing In For-Profit Detention ...

Wells Fargo Private Prisons

10/17/11

Huffington Post

Latino and Somali immigrants are organizing in Minneapolis, Minn., against Wells Fargo, telling the bank to stop donating to anti-immigrant politicians and investing in private prison corporations while courting immigrant customers.

About 150 people, many of them Wells Fargo customers and Latino or Somali immigrants, gathered outside a Wells Fargo branch on Saturday to protest the bank. The protest was part of a larger effort by 84 advocacy groups calling for Wells Fargo to divest its money from companies that profit off of immigrant detention.

The protesters called Wells Fargo hypocritical for targeting Latinos and immigrant customers while also giving money to causes that immigrants largely oppose, such as private immigrant detention centers and bills that make it difficult to migrate legally to the United States. Wells Fargo uses its mutual funds to invest in two of the largest for-profit detention companies: Corrections Corporation of America and the GEO Group, both of which spend millions each year lobbying for stricter immigration enforcement.

?On the one hand, Wells Fargo is launching coordinated ad campaigns around the country to recruit scores of new immigrant customers,? said Greg Nammacher, secretary-treasurer of Service Employees International Union Local 26, one of the organizers of a Saturday protest against the bank. ?On the other hand, they?re financing the criminalization of immigrants through both support of anti-immigrant politicians and investing in companies like [Corrections Corporation of America].?

The two private prison companies, along with a third major company called Management and Training Corporation, profit a combined $5 billion from immigrant detention, according to Brave New Foundation?s ?Immigrants for Sale? project. They have acknowledged that a slower pace of immigration enforcement would hurt their bottom line, with Corrections Corporation of America writing in its 2010 annual report that ?the relaxation of enforcement efforts? could reduce demand for their services.

Both companies have been accused of cutting corners and hiring guards and workers who mistreat immigrant detainees. As of December 2010, Wells Fargo had invested $5.9 million in Corrections Corporation of America and $88.7 million in the GEO Group, In These Times reported in July.

Wells Fargo said its critics were misinformed that it invested its own funds in Corrections Corporation of America or the GEO Group, and said that any investments in the companies were made by Wells Fargo mutual funds using money from clients.

?Wells Fargo respects the seriousness of our country?s ongoing debate on immigration reform,? Wells Fargo spokesman John Roehm said in a statement. ?However, we do not, as a corporation, take positions on public policy issues that do not directly affect our company?s ability to serve customers and support team members.?

Wells Fargo launched a new effort in April to gain Latino customers by educating them about banking in 13 cities. The bank also runs Spanish-language ads targeting potential Latino customers. Meanwhile, they have not responded to appeals from immigration advocacy groups to divest their money from the companies, Nammacher said.

?The immigrant community has no intention of standing by while Wells Fargo finances their own demise using their own deposits,? he said. ?Companies like Wells Fargo that are entrenched in our broken immigration system, they?re either going to be a part of propagating the problem or they?ll be responsible and divest from anti-immigrant corporations and politicians.?

The Wells Fargo Employee PAC has donated to politicians who have proposed crackdowns on unauthorized immigration, including Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), an advocate of more immigration enforcement, and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.). Bachmann has struck a hard-line stance on undocumented immigration during her campaign for the GOP presidential nomination, promising in a Saturday speech to impose stricter border enforcement if she wins the presidency.

Of course, not all immigrants oppose increasing border enforcement or deportations, or favor easier paths to citizenship. But among Latinos, 38 percent of whom are immigrants and 19 percent are undocumented, a strong majority oppose crackdowns on unauthorized immigration, according to 2010 estimates from the Pew Hispanic Center. Most Latinos also support paths to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already in the country, according to the Pew report, a move that politicians like Bachmann decry as amnesty.

One protester, Ibrahim Nur, said he was especially angry that the Wells Fargo Employee PAC donated money to Rep. John Kline (R-Minn.), who opposes comprehensive immigration reform. Nur became a citizen six years ago, but wants to see changes to the immigration system so he can more easily bring his family over from Somalia.

Nur opened an account at Wells Fargo in 2003, and worked there as a security guard from 2006 until earlier this year. But he may take his money elsewhere now that he knows the Wells Fargo Employee PAC donates money to politicians who oppose immigration reform.

?All of the money that I was paying, I realized that was going to a politician named John Kline, who is against immigration stuff,? Nur said. ?It takes forever to bring [family] here because of the laws that we have here. ? This politician makes it even harder.?
