Makeup? Fine. Mask? Go for it. Hair dye? Just do it. Decorative contact lenses?
Hold on there.
Pennsylvania's opthamologists want to remind Halloween partiers that they should take a pass on those discount store contact lenses. It's illegal to sell them without a prescription, but more importantly, you can hurt yourself using them.
To cite a recent news release: The Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology are working together to warn parents and teens that purchasing contact lenses without an eye examination and a prescription from a licensed eye care professional can cause serious eye disorders and infections, which may lead to blindness.
All contact lenses are
medical devices that require a prescription and proper fitting by an eye care
professional. Even if someone has perfect vision, they need to get an eye exam
and a prescription from an eye care professional in order to wear any kind of
contacts, including cosmetic lenses, they say.
?
Federal law classifies contact lenses as medical
devices and restricts their distribution to licensed eye care professionals.
Consumers should only buy decorative contact lenses from an eye care
professional or a seller who asks for a prescription.
?
Eye care professionals measure each eye to
properly fit contact lenses for the patient, according to the news release. There is no such thing as ?one-size-fits-all?
contact lenses, it says. Contacts that are not properly fitted may scratch the eye or
cause blood vessels to grow into the cornea.
In addition, eye care professionals provide patients with instructions on appropriate contact lens care. Contacts that are not cleaned and disinfected increase the risk of eye infection, it says. Contact lenses may not be appropriate for everyone, including people who have frequent eye infections, severe allergies, dry eye that is resistant to treatment, dusty work environments or an inability to handle and care for lenses.
