USC Football Notebook: Marqise Lee's injury not too serious

By Scott Wolf

scott.wolf@dailynews.com @InsideUSC on Twitter

not too serious

USC wide receiver Marqise Lee suffered a bone bruise in his shoulder and is day-to-day, which came as a relief to Trojans coach Lane Kiffin on Saturday night.

"He might be back (during) training camp," Kiffin said.

It was feared Lee suffered a more serious injury Friday when he landed hard on his shoulder while catching a deep pass. Lee attended Saturday's practice in shorts and a jersey but did not participate.

Lee did not speak to the media.

Charges dropped against Pomee

Kiffin said tight end Junior Pomee would not be allowed back on the team despite the fact a Los Angeles Superior Court judge dismissed charges against Pomee on Friday. Pomee faced five felony counts, including burglary, grand theft and receiving stolen property for thefts that occurred next to the USC campus.

"We've already moved on," Kiffin said.

The district attorney's office might refile the charges because an investigator was injured and unavailable to work on the case.

Double duty for Willson

Walk-on quarterback Chris Willson, who transferred from Wake Forest, is also practicing at tight end. He played quarterback in Thursday's scrimmage at the Coliseum but

also played tight end in several practices last week.

Injured trio returns

Safety Su'a Cravens along with offensive tackles Kevin Graf and Aundrey Walker returned to practice. Cravens is believed to have suffered a possible concussion last week.

Tailbacks Justin Davis, Tre Madden and Ty Isaac did not practice because of unspecified injuries. Starter Silas Redd and Javorius Allen were the only fully healthy tailbacks.

New roles for Banner and Wheeler

Offensive tackles Zach Banner and Chad Wheeler were placed on the defensive line to try to block field goals during practice. Banner is 6-foot-9 while Wheeler is 6-7. Two years ago, USC had All-America offensive tackle Matt Kalil block field goals.

Recruit watch

Cornerback/wide receiver Adoree Jackson of Serra High in Gardena attended practice. He is considered one of the top players in the nation.

Defensive end Connors Humphreys of Portland announced he was down to five schools: USC, UCLA, Arizona State, Wisconsin and Oregon State.

Linebacker Bobby Okereke from Foothill High in Santa Ana committed to Stanford. USC was among the schools that offered him a scholarship.

Bigelow prepared

Freshman defensive tackle Kenny Bigelow said he noticed a big difference being ready for training camp because he enrolled in January and participated in spring drills.

"It definitely would have been a lot harder (starting in the fall)," Bigelow said. "I feel like I've definitely taken what I learned in the spring and I'm a lot more comfortable now."

Chinese wheat millers to visit North Dakota

A group of Chinese milling executives plan to visit North Dakota to get a firsthand look at the state's hard red spring wheat crop.

The North Dakota Wheat Commission says the millers will be in the state Sunday through Tuesday. Officials say the Chinese millers are interested in hearing about growing conditions, price outlook and wheat breeding and quality programs at North Dakota State University.

Officials say demand for U.S. wheat in China is strong and growing. U.S. sales to the country for the first two months of the years totaled more than 131 million bushels. Officials say that's nearly nine times the five-year average.

[All iPads] White or Black iPad mini?

I plan on buying Apple's latest tablet, the iPad 5 or iPad mini 2, but I have hard time choosing which color. When I used my friend's iPad 3 (white), it seemed that retina displays stands out more than on a black one. But with the black, you are less distracted by the bezels.

Anyone here with a white iPad that can tell me if the white bezels really are a problem and if retina display stands out more?

Oh and black iPad mini owners, does a single nail scratch and the slate shows off a lot?

thanks!

Which "missing" feature do you want the most on the next iPhone [Poll]

Which "missing" feature do you want the most on the next iPhone? It's written "missing" very deliberately, since specifically we're talking about features that some of the latest competitor devices have brought with them to market recently. Apple doesn't make a habit of 'playing catchup' but there's a bunch of cool stuff out there that a whole lot of us would love to see included in the next iPhone.

Motorola, for example, has recently introduced a handful of devices that all pack some pretty interesting things. The new Droid Maxx, for example, has a great honkin' battery stuffed in the back that promises a full 48-hour battery life. Then, along came their Moto X with an always listening functionality for its voice-controlled, natural language interface. We've previously run polls to gather your thoughts on all of these, but now we want to see how they rank alongside some other cool features.

Back to the Moto X, it also comes with a new, fancy active display that lives on top of the lockscreen. As Android Central's Phil Nickinson describes it:

Easy on the eyes and easy on battery life

It's more than a lockscreen. It puts a whole bunch of information on top of the lockscreen, so you don't need to power up the full display to action your notifications, or see what time it is, and a bunch of other stuff. Honestly, I think it's a fantastic idea.

Then theres OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). Just one of the things Nokia is doing with their pretty impressive smartphone cameras. While on it's own it may not be the be-all-end-all, but there's no questioning the impact it can have on the quality of your camera.

Or, maybe there's something else completely you'd prefer to see Apple include in the next iPhone. Whatever it may be, drop a vote in the poll up top, and share your thoughts with us all in the comments!

Olympic Swimmers and Cancer Survivors Team Up to Make Waves in Lake Washington for Swim Across America

Newswise ? SEATTLE ? August 8, 2013 ? Swim Across America (SAA), a non-profit dedicated to raising money for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swimming-related events, today announced its fifth-annual Swim Across America ? Seattle Open Water Swim. The charity event will take place Saturday, September 7, and is a rare opportunity for Seattle-area swimmers to help in the fight against cancer by taking the plunge into Lake Washington alongside past members of the US Olympic Swim Team, including local Olympians Ariana Kukors, Mary Wayte Bradburn, Rick Colella, Emily Silver, Dana Kirk, and Margaret Hoelzer. All proceeds raised from the Swim Across America event will benefit Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) and its mission to turn cancer patients into cancer survivors. Swimmers of all skill levels are invited to participate in the two-mile or half-mile swims, as well as a 50-meter freestyle open-water Kids? Splash.

The two-mile swim begins at Mercer Island?s Mercerwood Shore Club (8 a.m. start) and the half-mile swim begins at Luther Burbank Park?s swim beach (8:30 a.m.), also on Mercer Island, where both will finish. The Kids? Splash will follow the finish of the longer swims. All participants and volunteers are invited to a post-swim celebration and award ceremony at the swim beach, featuring a pancake breakfast, refreshments and DJ entertainment.

Interested swimmers and volunteers can learn more and register at www.swimacrossamerica.org/seattle. Each adult swimmer is responsible for a registration fee of $50, which applies toward a minimum fundraising requirement of $300. Swimmers may form teams in honor or memory of someone who has battled cancer. In 2012, 303 swimmers and 165 volunteers raised more than $235,000 for SCCA.

?Swim Across America - Seattle has quickly become a signature event for swimmers from the Seattle area and beyond, generating much-needed funding for cancer research, prevention and treatment,? said Janel Jorgensen McArdle, a 1988 Olympic silver medalist and CEO & President of Swim Across America. ?We are thrilled to again direct all event proceeds to our partners at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a very worthy organization that shares our commitment to the fight against cancer.?

SCCA unites the adult and pediatric cancer-care programs of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine and Seattle Children?s. Contributions from this year?s event support research and treatment for pancreatic cancer patients, as well as research performed in the Cellular Therapy Laboratory, responsible for valuable cellular therapy products key to the advanced treatment of blood cancers, including leukemia and lymphoma.

?We are thrilled to partner with Swim Across America in uniting elite swimmers, cancer survivors and the community to raise awareness and funding for the important work that SCCA does every day in the fight against cancer,? said Norm Hubbard, Executive Vice President of SCCA. ?This has become a powerful annual event and we are grateful to be involved.?

To help area swimmers prepare, Swim Across America has partnered with Michael Phelps Swimming (MPS) to offer two training courses on August 17 and 18, in Bellevue and Mercer Island, respectively. Each three-hour class will provide an overview of the specific swim courses, along with instruction on open-water swimming considerations including breath control in dynamic water, stroke efficiency and handling open water emergencies such as fatigue and cramping. To sign up or learn more, interested swimmers can visit www.swimacrossamerica.org/breakowt. Taught by top MPS trainers, each course is limited to 25 participants.

In the past 25 years, Swim Across America has raised more than $45 million for the nation?s top cancer institutions, involving current and former Olympians and thousands of swimmers and volunteers. Nationally, the participation of Olympic athletes has been a regular feature in SAA events, representing Olympians from the Berlin Games in 1936 to London in 2012 and countless World, Olympic, American, and NCAA Records and medals.

About Seattle Cancer Care Alliance
Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) is a cancer treatment center that unites doctors from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, UW Medicine and Seattle Children?s. Our goal, every day, is to turn cancer patients into cancer survivors. Our purpose is to lead the world in the prevention and treatment of cancer. SCCA has five clinical care sites: an outpatient clinic on the Hutchinson Center campus, a pediatric inpatient unit at Seattle Children?s, an adult inpatient unit at UW Medical Center, a medical oncology clinic at Halvorson Cancer Care, and a radiation oncology clinic at UW Medicine / Northwest Hospital. Additionally, proton therapy services are provided at SCCA Proton Therapy, A Procure Center. For more information about SCCA, visit www.seattlecca.org.
