Setting the Tone at the Top ? Business Ethics | The Coal Blog

Tone at the top refers to the ethical atmosphere that is made in the workplace by the organizations leadership. Whatever tone the management sets will have a trickle-down affect on the employees of the corporation. If the tone locate by managers upholds ethical integrity, employees are more inclined to uphold the same values. However, if upper management appears unconcerned with ethics and focuses solely on the bottom border, employees will be more prone to commit fraud.

LCD and Eink dualscreen prototypes show up at IFA, one vendor already said to be on board

Well hells bells, it was only yesterday that the idea of an e-ink / LCD screen mash-up device was the stuff of patent dreams, and now it's a reality. The chaps at Stuff were shown the prototype handsets at a closed meeting at IFA, as expected with a regular screen on one side, and the e-reader-style display on the other. E-ink was apparently tight lipped about possible vendor interest, but they did confirm that one firm was working with the concept already. We're not about to make any leaps, but if we'd applied for the patent, we'd also want first dibs.

Next generation of military aircraft will be unmanned

The role of unmanned aerial vehicles in future will increase, Russian Air Force Commander-in-chief Maj. Gen. Viktor Bondarev told Interfax. "The trends for weapons of armed struggle, including combat aviation, give reason to believe that sixth-generation military aerial vehicles will be mostly unmanned. This concerns fighters, bombers and strategic bombers," the commander said.

"The technical progress and information technology development is occurring at such a pace that a man, pilot, operator already has to stretch himself to the limit of his physical and psychological abilities," Viktor Bondarev said.

"And what will happen tomorrow, at the next stage of scientific and technological development? Man simply cannot keep up, he cannot realize all the potential of new next-generation aircraft. Involuntarily, he has already delegated some of his duties to the machine, be it an artificial intellect or an on-board supercomputer," the commander said.

Both Russia and other countries "are working on the drone theme, work on strategic drones is going at full speed," he said.

"They are keeping low profile. But we know that such work is being carried out. And it has already yielded some results. Every now and one can see from stories on military operations in any particular region the results of unmanned aviation.

Many drones are involved in operations conducted by the U.S. and their allies in the Middle and Near East. It will suffice to recall how one U.S. drone recently became a trophy of the Iranian air defense force," the Air Force commander said.

Total voluntary support for Indiana University in fiscal 2012 is second highest on record

Last modified: Wednesday, August 29, 2012

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aug. 29, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University received $347.9 million in support from the private sector in fiscal year 2012, the second highest total in the history of the university. The annual total voluntary support figure, which reports actual dollars received, includes $154 million in gifts for IU through the IU Foundation, $17.4 million in private gifts for the Riley Children's Foundation and $176.5 million in nongovernmental grants awarded to the university.

"We deeply appreciate the steadfast commitment of the donors and grant makers who have clearly demonstrated their confidence in Indiana University through their generosity," IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. "They recognize the power of the university to push the boundaries of knowledge, to enrich the lives of our citizens and to contribute to economic revitalization, and their support makes it possible for the university to realize its potential."

Total voluntary support is up 18 percent from fiscal 2011. Nongovernmental grants to faculty and programs increased by 33 percent over fiscal 2011 and set a new record.

"It is also a tribute to faculty excellence and innovation to have grants from the private sector awarded to faculty and programs reach the highest level on record," McRobbie continued. "Record support in this area is a clear indication of IU's stature as one of the world's leading public research universities."

IU Foundation President Gene Tempel emphasized the overall impact of the good news. "Ultimately, total voluntary support is much more than a number. These gifts and grants represent opportunities for students to succeed, faculty to break new ground and the university as a whole to transform lives across Indiana, the nation and the world," Tempel said. "It is evident that the university has truly loyal donors and friends, and we are grateful for their continued support."

The record for total voluntary support was set in fiscal 2008 when IU received $408.6 million. That year included two extraordinary gifts: an estate gift of $77 million from the late Jesse H. and Beulah C. Cox, and $69 million from the Lilly Endowment.

Indiana University's fiscal 2012 total of $347.9 million is reported to the Council for Aid to Education, which issues an annual report in the first quarter of each calendar year on giving to education and compiles a national ranking of all colleges and universities. Indiana University has appeared in the Council for Aid to Education's Top 20 list in 17 of the past 20 years.

Our daughter was diagnosed with bipolar when she was 13, and we have been able to handle things up until about 3 years ago.? Over the past year, these issues have gotten worse to the point that we had to make the decission to kick her out and obtain temporary custody of her 2 young children.? This was a very difficult decision, however we really had no choice as she was making poor decisions that were having an inpack on the kids and would verbally abuse us adn threaten us.? We have given her chances but she never follows through and projects all her trouble onto us.? We know we did the right thing but have guilt feelings.? Would love to just have her come back home but that would not change anything and we would again be enabling her, which we can not do anymore.? She tells us to not contact her, however when she wants something she texts us, i have not been responding as I feel that she has made her choices and needs to figure things out on her own, as hard as it is for me to not just jump in the car and help her.? Has anyone else been in this situation and how do you deal with the dailey feelings and thoughts.

Deloitte's Social Media Policy ?Empower & Trust? - Business 2 ...

At Social Media Down Under I interviewed Simon Townsend, the Innovations Manager at Deloitte Australia about their three word social media policy ? ?Empower And Trust?.

Here is my interview with Simon Townsend.

Adam Franklin: Hi it?s Adam Franklin, and we are at Social Media Down Under. I?m here with one of the speakers, Simon Townsend, who is an innovation manager at Deloitte. Now I?d really like to share with you the key take home from Simon?s presentation. Simon would you mind sharing with our audience what they need to know from your presentation today?

Simon Townsend: Absolutely. For me the key take away would be around empowering trust. What we have done at Deloitte is we have actually created a safe space using social network, where people can learn how to use social media, and how to use that to best effect internally, which they are then using to take that on externally. So it?s a safe space and what we have done is empowered them to use social media, we are trusting them to do so, so part of the empowerment is that not only we are letting people go and letting people do what they like, buts its giving people the tools and the knowledge to actually do that in an effective way.

Adam Franklin: So you?ve taken a 30 page social media policy and condensed it down to 3 words right?

Simon Townsend: That?s right.

Adam Franklin: So what are they?

Simon Townsend: Empower and trust. And when it comes down to it, that?s what it?s all about for us.

Adam Franklin: Absolutely, and great results you?re getting internally aren?t you?

Simon Townsend: Absolutely, we got 90% of people using the space. Not all of them actively adding to it but everyone is reading it and sharing knowledge, and I get lots of comments from people who I know don?t post about what they are reading. So it?s interesting to see how well it permeates through without being actively used by someone who is interested.

Adam Franklin: Awesome. Well thank you for your time, and on twitter @wittering and I?m @Franklin_Adam. Thanks very much.
?
Thanks! You can follow Simon Townsend @wittering or Deloitte Australia @Green_Dot.

Chicago teachers union gives 10-day strike notice

CHICAGO (AP) ? The Chicago Teachers Union issued a 10-day strike notice Wednesday, saying teachers in the nation's third-largest school district are ready to walk off the job for the first time in 25 years.

Union President Karen Lewis said contract talks with the Chicago Board of Education, which have been under way since November, have not yet touched on some issues that teachers are most concerned about, including wages. She said job security and teacher evaluations also are issues.

The notice means the soonest teachers could strike is Sept. 10, but it doesn't mean a strike will definitely happen.

Lewis said no strike date has been set, and the union would continue negotiating until there is a contract, even if there is a strike.

"This is a difficult decision for all of us to make," Lewis said. "But this is the only way to get the board's attention and show them that we are serious about getting a fair contract which will give our students the resources they deserve."

Some of the district's 400,000 students have already started school; the rest begin Tuesday. The last Chicago teachers strike was in 1987 and lasted 19 days. The most recent contract expired in June, when 90 percent of the more than 26,000 union members voted to authorize a strike if a contract was not reached over the summer.

Lewis claims the public schools administration "seems determined to have a toxic relationship with its employees," saying teachers have been belittled and demoralized. She pointed out that a previously negotiated raise was canceled and changes have been made to the way teachers are evaluated.

Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard issued a statement saying students "cannot afford to be removed from the classroom" just as they're starting a new longer day, and said the district will meet every day with the union to try to avoid a strike.

The school district has offered teachers a four-year contract with raises of 2 percent a year, which school board spokeswoman Becky Carroll said would cost $160 million. Lewis has repeatedly said the raise offered by the board is not acceptable.

The district also wants the union to agree to a joint committee to come up with a new system to pay teachers, other than automatic raises based on seniority. The district said that doesn't mean pay raises would necessarily be based only on merit.

"It could take a lot of forms; we have not even talked about it," Carroll said.

The board last week authorized spending $25 million in the event of a strike, which Carroll said would help ensure the tens of thousands of students who rely on the schools for two meals a day are fed and have a safe place during the day.

Much of the teachers' frustration has centered on Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who rescinded a 4 percent raise last year and then tried to go around the union in his push for a longer school day by asking teachers at individual schools to waive the union contract to work more hours. The Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board subsequently blocked Emanuel's negotiations with schools.

He still was able to lengthen the school day for children to 7 hours, starting this fall, without the union's approval. The Board of Education agreed to hire almost 500 new teachers so it wouldn't have to pay current teachers more to work longer hours.

But class size, pay and job security remain top concerns for teachers, the union said.

"We will have a contract, and it will come the easy way or the hard way," Lewis said. "If our members are on the picket line, we will still be at the negotiating table trying to hammer out an equitable agreement."

Cyber spying expands in Iran after operation is blown: researchers

BOSTON (Reuters) - The scope of a cyber espionage campaign targeting Iran and other parts of the Middle East has widened, even after security experts blew the operation's cover last month, according to the research firm that discovered the Mahdi Trojan.

Israeli security company Seculert said that it has identified about 150 new Mahdi victims over the past six weeks as the developers of the virus have changed the code to evade detection from anti-virus programs. That has brought the total number of infections found so far to nearly 1,000, the bulk of them in Iran.

"These guys continue to work," Seculert Chief Technology Officer Aviv Raff said via telephone from the company's headquarters in Israel.

The decision to keep the operation running implies that Mahdi's operators were not particularly worried about getting caught, said Roel Schouwenberg, a senior researcher with Kaspersky Lab, which has collaborated with Seculert in analyzing Mahdi.

Schouwenberg said that some viruses are designed for stealth because they become useless if they are discovered. He pointed to the Stuxnet Trojan that targeted Iran's nuclear program in 2010. After that customer-built virus was uncovered by a security researcher in Belarus, authorities in Iran discovered it in a uranium enrichment facility that it had targeted.

Mahdi is a "less professional" operation that runs on technology built with widely available software, according to Schouwenberg.

"If the quality of your operation is not that high, then maybe you don't care about being discovered," he said. "But the scary thing is that it can still be effective."

The Mahdi Trojan lets remote attackers steal files from infected PCs and monitor emails as well as instant messages, Seculert and Kaspersky said. It can also record audio, log keystrokes and take screen shots of activity on those computers.

The firms said they believed multiple gigabytes of data have been uploaded from targeted machines.

Targets of Mahdi include critical infrastructure firms, engineering students, financial services firms and government embassies located in five Middle Eastern countries, with the majority of the infections in Iran, according to the two security firms.

The bulk of the new victims were in Iran, which is where most infections have occurred to date, according to Seculert, though a few were identified in the United States and Germany.

The two firms have declined to identify specific victims.

Raff said that he suspects the campaign is being run by hacker activists, or "hactivists," who are either funded by a government or provide information they collect to a nation for ideological reasons. He declined to say which country might be involved.

Seculert and Kaspersky dubbed the campaign Mahdi after a term referring to the prophesied redeemer of Islam because evidence suggests the attackers used a folder with that name as they developed the software to run the project.

They also included a text file named mahdi.txt in the malicious software that infected target computers.

Parents overwhelmed by reference book chaos ? TalkVietnam

While the publishing of textbooks is monopolised by the Education Publishing House, the reference books market is a lucrative market for many publishing companies.

Parents bewildered by the choice

Parents bewildered by the choice

Most of the reference books plagiarise each other, and only vary based on appearance. Many book stores in Hanoi provide discounts from 10-30%, some even lower the prices by 50% to attract customers.

A parent shared, ?When I was looking for a reference book for my third grade nephew and niece, I found dozens of books from different publishing houses. However most of them have the same content and some even had wrong information. The book stores make money either way.?

At the book stores at 45B Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Hue is having difficulties in choosing books for her fifth grade child.

?It?s lucky that I?ve done some research before. Though most people don?t seem to like the books written by southern authors, I think their books are easy to understand. Of course, I only select books from credible publishing houses and university lecturers.?

According to a bookseller, the books receive a rudimentary inspection before going on sale.

Most of the book stores in Hanoi still prioritise northern authors, however, the southern publishing houses have opened their agencies in the north recently and provide a great deal of books to the market.

Pham Thi Yen, Headmaster of Thanh Cong B Primary School said, ?It?s kind of hard now to choose from so many books. There are so many reference books that contain the wrong information. This is not something new because these books in reality are mostly written by only one or two authors.?

Yen further advise parents to choose books for children carefully.

Ngo Tran Ai, Head of Education Publishing Houses said, ?There are a lot of books that have the wrong information in them because the education book market is not control by any state agency. But more importantly, some publishing houses don?t control the books as they co-operate with their partners or don?t necessarily fully inspect the books.?

He also said parents should buy reference books by authors who also write text books, famous and credible authors and seek advice from schools and teachers.

?Most schools will give advice to parents when it comes to choosing books. Parents should consult with teachers before buying reference books.? Yen said. ?The books with the least mistakes are written by lecturers of National University of Education.?

Positive Thinking and Overcoming Negativity | The Simple Self ...

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

By Trevor Johnson

Negative thoughts are the greatest hindrance in the world. Someone who is suffering from chronic negativity has no chance of maximizing their potential in life. Overcoming negativity is necessary to finish any task. When negative thoughts are allowed to prosper, the person infected will have very little chance of experiencing growth and success. Every day we are bombarded with information and because of this, dread, anxiety and stress can easily enter our mind. Negativity is a battle within yourself. No one can take this problem away unless you are committed to overcoming negativity.

Removing anxiety, doubt and fear is not an easy task: it will involve a process. It will entail you focusing on positive thinking. Even in the most dire situations something positive can come up but it takes willingness, creativity and awareness to see what are this issues that can be turned into something useful.

Negative thoughts can be life draining. They can lead a person to doubt themselves and not act upon their dreams. For example, so many people get stuck on creating street protests but fail to come up with alternative solutions to the problem. While protesting on the streets is not a bad idea if you want to make others aware, it should be coupled with positive actions that can tap the interest of others.

Positive thinking is the ability to create and to inspire. It is not just about changing your thoughts but making sure that it translates to actions in your daily life otherwise the positive thoughts will not provide the impact that you would like to have.

In order to train yourself to have a better mindset, it would be best to learn how to calm your thoughts down. It gets easier to compose positive thoughts if your thoughts are arranged in such a manner that you can control them. Even when life gets too busy and hectic take the time to breathe slowly, relax and empty your thoughts through meditation.

Meditation is the art of not thinking about anything or just focusing on thinking about images that you would like to happen. The mind can be trained to see a much better perspective, for example even a person in jail can get through the toughest days by learning to think positively, they can imagine the river banks, the sunlight, the forest and other desirable qualities of nature like roses instead of focusing on their plight.

In general, people do have the ability to stay focused, calm and are able to maintain positive thoughts. Encouraging others despite the circumstances is do-able. But in order to get to positive thinking, you need to learn to discipline your mind in order to overcome negativity.

Positive thinking is mostly about thinking about the present time and not worrying about the details of the past and the future. It is about training the mind and body to respond to what they can change now, not what they will not be able to work upon due to various circumstances. It is about being alert and making the most of a given situation.

Dianne Ashworth Bionic Eye: 'Little Flash' Brings Australian Woman ...

By Thuy Ong
SYDNEY (Reuters) - A bionic eye has given an Australian woman partial sight and researchers say it is an important step towards eventually helping visually impaired people get around independently.
Dianne Ashworth, who has severe vision loss due to the inherited condition retinitis pigmentosa, was fitted with a prototype bionic eye in May at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. It was switched on a month later.
"All of a sudden I could see a little flash ... it was amazing," she said in a statement.
"Every time there was stimulation there was a different shape that appeared in front of my eye."
The bionic eye, designed, built and tested by the Bionic Vision Australia, a consortium of researchers partially funded by the Australian government, is equipped with 24 electrodes with a small wire that extends from the back of the eye to a receptor attached behind the ear.
It is inserted into the choroidal space, the space next to the retina within the eye.
"The device electrically stimulates the retina," said Dr Penny Allen, a specialist surgeon who implanted the prototype.
"Electrical impulses are passed through the device, which then stimulate the retina. Those impulses then pass back to the brain (creating the image)."
The device restores mild vision, where patients are able to pick up major contrasts and edges such as light and dark objects. Researchers hope to develop it so blind patients can achieve independent mobility.
"Di is the first patient of three with this prototype device, the next step is analyzing the visual information that we are getting from the stimulation," Allen said.
The operation itself was made simple so it can be readily taught to eye surgeons worldwide.
"We didn't want to have a device that was too complex in a surgical approach that was very difficult to learn," Allen.
Similar research has been conducted at Cornell University in New York by researchers who have deciphered the neural code, which are the pulses that transfer information to the brain, in mice.
The researchers have developed a prosthetic device that has succeeded in restoring near-normal sight to blind mice.
According to the World Health Organization, 39 million people around the world are blind and 246 million have low vision.
"What we're going to be doing is restoring a type of vision which is probably going to be black and white, but what we're hoping to do for these patients who are severely visually impaired is to give them mobility," Allen said.

Japanese pachinko mogul sues Wynn Resorts in Tokyo

(AP) ? Japanese pachinko tycoon Kazuo Okada has filed a lawsuit in Tokyo District Court seeking $140 million in damages from casino operator Wynn Resorts.

Universal Entertainment said in a statement Wednesday that it is seeking damages for harm caused to its share price and business due to Wynn's decision to remove Okada as a board member and reclaim the $2.77 billion of shares in the company owned by Okada's company, Universal Entertainment Corp.

Okada and billionaire Steve Wynn, the co-founder, chairman and CEO of Wynn Resorts, are former friends and business partners, but have been trading accusations of improprieties as regulators investigate alleged violations of U.S. anti-corruption laws on both sides.

The lawsuit filed in Tokyo this week is demanding 11 billion yen ($140 million) in damages. It alleges that Wynn's actions and comments hurt Universal Entertainment's stock price, hindering its business opportunities and damaging Okada's reputation.

"This action asserts that Steve Wynn has indulged in fraud, deception, theft and betrayal to maintain control of his gaming enterprises and enrich himself based on a false and predetermined pretext," Universal Entertainment said in a statement.

Universal's spokesman in Tokyo was not immediately available for comment. Wynn's staff in Macau referred inquiries to their offices in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The two sides have been feuding for months. Wynn refused to back Okada's plan to build a $2 billion casino resort project in the Philippines, saying it would compete with Wynn Resorts' own business there. Meanwhile, Wynn commissioned an investigation and sued Okada in Nevada for alleged breach of his fiduciary duties and other "gross improprieties."

In March, Universal countersued, questioning a donation by Wynn Resorts to the University of Macau that is now being probed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Nevada Gaming Commission as a possible violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

One of Japan's wealthiest businessmen, with net worth over $1.8 billion according to Forbes, Okada started out selling jukeboxes and then expanded into selling the machines used in pachislot, or slot machines, and pachinko, a popular form of pinball that skirts Japan's law against gambling by awarding prizes that players can later swap for cash.

Wynn Resorts' articles of incorporation provide for redemption at "fair value" of the shares held by "unsuitable" individuals. After designating Okada as unsuitable, the company sought to redeem the shares, valued at about $2.7 billion in mid-February, for about $1.9 billion.

A meeting a decade ago sets Romney's path

BOSTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney's path to the Republican presidential nomination started more than a decade ago.

As CEO of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, he was at a crossroads as the closing ceremonies approached. Political and professional suitors were all around.

That's when he met with Kerry Healey, head of the Massachusetts GOP. During a meeting that ran an hour too long, she pressed the successful businessman to run for governor.

Romney would soon agree to run, and the decision would open the next phase of his life.

Romney's role as Massachusetts governor became the launching pad for a political career that reaches its pinnacle Thursday when he accepts the Republican presidential nomination.

Those who know Romney well say he's always been driven to driven to lead.

Samsung Galaxy Note II: hands-on with the new S Pen-toting phablet (video)

Samsung Galaxy Note II handson video

Samsung's got a handful of announcements to offer its mobile fans at IFA this year, and it's started big: with the Galaxy Note II. The new Android device packs a larger 5.5-inch, 1,280 x 720 16:9 screen, but still falls roughly within the same generous footprint of its predecessor. A year on, we've now got a more powerful SoC, up from a dual-core 1.4GHz processor to a new quad-core 1.6GHz Exynos chipset (yes, that's even faster than the one found in the Galaxy S III) and Android Jelly Bean right out of the box. Samsung's putting a lot of focus on making the most of all that screen space and S Pen functionality. We got our hands (both of them) on the Galaxy Note II just a few hours early, so after the gallery, skip past the break for our first impressions.

How to Survive the Stress of Care Giving

The statistics are staggering. Today there are 54,000 people over 100 years of age living in the United States. That number is projected to soar to an incredible 350,000 by the year 2050. The fact is that people are living longer with chronic illnesses and 21 percent of adults today care for someone an average of 20 hours per week. That unpaid care equals 18 percent of our national health care spending and these numbers are set to increase drastically.
Elder care giving can be especially complex given the personal, health and financial challenges that accompany caring for an older family member or friend. The stressful situations that occur between adult children and aging parents can be detrimental to the health and well-being of all concerned. In these situations, it is especially important that caregivers manage their own well-being at all times.
Dr. Jim McCabe, Geriatric Care Manager, President of Eldercare Resources and CSA Instructor, is on the front line of these complex issues every day. Over a period of more than 25 years, he has assisted hundreds of families in planning elder care and long term care planning. Jim was the host of last week?s timely CSA webinar ?CAREGIVER BURNOUT: Managing the Challenges of Caregiving?. CSAs can view the webinar in the Member Resources section of the CSA website.
Communication is Key
Jim provides some tips for caregivers to help lessen the physical, emotional, behavioral and financial stresses associated with the complicated situation of caring for a loved one in need. Caregivers should recognize that caregiving is often difficult. Role changes, family history and generational differences are often complicated by communication problems. Most families have little or no experience talking about medical or financial issues so there is no history or ground rules for these conversations. One way to combat this is to have these conversations at the most optimal time and to understand the reservations that your loved one has. Is your mother at her best in the morning? Does your father communicate well after his nap in the afternoon? Is your mother-in-law comfortable talking about her health and her money? Is privacy the first concern for your uncle? Knowing how they feel about these issues and speaking to them when they are best able to participate in the conversation will help to make the difficult conversations a little easier.
Respite Care Is a Necessity, Not a Luxury
Many caregivers do not survive the caregiving process. Physical and emotional stress can lead to chronic illness, substance abuse and isolation. Managing your own well-being is as important as taking care of the one you love. It is important to remember to vent your feelings. A support group can be a great outlet for sharing and networking. Everyday stress management is important and meditation and keeping up your leisure activities goes a long way to sustaining well being. By simplifying life, developing plans and building networks a caregiver can help ease the stress of caring for a loved one.
Many of you have become Certified Senior Advisors as a result of your own experience caring for a loved one. Have you found caregiving stressful? How has your experience benefitted your clients? What networks have been the most helpful? Please share your story with us.

Isaac weakens, storm surge tops levee in Plaquemines Parish

A man crosses a street in New Orleans during Hurricane Isaac, Aug. 29, 2012. (David J. Phillip/AP)

A storm surge from Hurricane Isaac topped a levee in Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans early Wednesday, officials said, trapping those who chose not to evacuate.

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser said the 18-mile-long, 8-foot-high levee?which is not part of the nearly $15 billion federal levee system constructed after Hurricane Katrina?was in the process of being raised.

"We knew we had a potential storm surge of 9 to 12 feet?we had an 8-foot levee," Nungesser said on CNN. "We're trying to get the few people who have stayed out. We've got a serious situation over there."

[Live-blog: Hurricane Isaac batters New Orleans, Gulf Coast]

Isaac made landfall at 6:45 p.m. CT Tuesday in Plaquemines Parish, and the slow-moving Category 1 hurricane?now centered about 50 miles southwest of New Orleans with maximum sustained winds topping 80 mph?is expected to dump as much as 20 inches of rain in several parts of Louisiana.

"Not only did we see the worst-case scenario, it got worse than that by this storm just stalling," Nungesser said. "So the levees can only take so much."

Nungesser said there were reports of up to 12 feet of water in some homes. "This is something I've never seen before," he said. "And I rode out Katrina."

[Slideshow: Hurricane Isaac pounds Gulf Coast]

Nungesser said three parish residents, including a woman on a roof, were saved by a private boat. Rescue workers were waiting for conditions to improve?and skies to lighten?before attempting other rescues.

"We're working with the U.S. Coast Guard to rescue people stranded on top of the levee," Nungesser said at a press conference.

The southern end of the parish was under a mandatory evacuation order, though it's not clear how many residents followed it.

"There are homes inundated and some folks trapped by water in those homes," Guy Laigast, director of homeland security for Plaquemines Parish, told the Weather Channel.

[Related: Hurricane Isaac as seen from space]

"Over 150 people have had to be rescued from #Isaac flooding," CNN's Rob Marciano tweeted. "The majority were within mandatory evacuation zones."

According to News Orleans' Times-Picayune, Jesse Schaffer and his son have been rescuing stranded residents with their boat.

"We've rescued at least 23 people including children," Jesse Shaffer Jr. said.

The Army Corps of Engineers said the New Orleans levee protection system appeared to be working. Meanwhile, more than 500,000 customers were left without power in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi, utility companies said. According to The Associated Press, most of the outages are in areas around New Orleans.

A tornado warning has also been issued in southern Mississippi.

Non-Profit and Tax-exempt: What's In a Name? | Musical America ...

By Robyn Guilliams

What is the difference between a ?non-profit? organization and a ?tax-exempt? organization?? I hear these terms used interchangeably ? do they mean the same thing?

Great question!? These terms do not mean the same thing.? All tax-exempt organizations are non-profits; however, not all non-profits are tax exempt.

When an organization wishes to be classified as ?non-profit?, it must register with a state ? usually the state in which it operates.? Every state has different classifications for non-profit organizations.? For instance, New York and some other states have a type of business classified as a ?Not-For-Profit Corporation.?? Other states have corporations that are classified as ?Non Stock Corporations.?? What all of these corporations have in common is that they do not have any owner, and the business of the organization is run by a board of directors.

Once an organization formally registers as a non-profit company with the state, the organization can request federal tax-exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service.? If granted tax-exempt status by the IRS, an organization will not have to pay federal taxes on its income (provided that income is related to the organization?s ?charitable mission?), and donations made to the organization generally will be tax deductible for the donor.

States often have additional requirements for organizations to qualify for tax-exempt status.? Some states will grant tax-exempt status automatically to organizations that have been granted federal tax-exempt status, while others require the organization to complete a separate request.

Some businesses elect to become non-profits without also being tax exempt. They do so for many strategic, marketing, and organizational reasons. However, the important take-away here is that not all non-profits are tax exempt. A tax exempt non-profit is subject to far greater government oversight and operational restrictions than a regular non-profit. Unless a non-profit organization is granted tax exempt status by the IRS, that organization is subject to the same tax and filing obligations as any other business!

Microsoft SkyDrive for Android app is now available, joins its mobile counterparts for cloud access

Microsoft's promise to bring a SkyDrive app to Android devices a few days ago has been kept. The folks in Redmond have announced that the aforementioned mobile software is now available for those who fancy Google's operating system. As you might expect, the list of features follows suit with the existing iOS and Windows Phone applications -- including multiple photo or video uploads, file sharing, opening stored files and file management with the ability to sort folders. While the app was built to work best with Android 4.0, it'll play nice with any handset that runs Gingerbread and above. If you're ready to install, a few clicks will do just that via the Google Play link below.
