Costain in Port Talbot, has taken part in an event to provide Careers Wales careers advisers with the latest knowledge about the career opportunities available for young people in construction, engineering, surveying, computing, land design and environmental jobs.
Costain is helping Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council in the design and construction of the Harbour Way Port Talbot project, the largest transport project in Wales since the construction of the M4, by utilising Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems and technology.
Costain representatives were on hand to provide insight into careers in this sector, as well as information on academic routes, qualifications and pathways that best equip young people for jobs at all skill levels, from plant operative to quantity surveyor.
The day also gave careers advisers an opportunity to go on a tour of the site to see how the computer design and production has been implemented in the building and construction undertaken to date.
The event is part of an on-going strategy by Careers Wales, designed to encourage more young people to take up science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) related subjects by highlighting the career options that they present.
Speaking after the event Ray Collier from Careers Wales West said: ?We have had some excellent feedback from the careers advisers who attended the day.?
?There is a need to engage with schools to encourage pupils to study subjects in science, technology, engineering and maths and then go on to secure further training or employment in these fields.? We also aim to inform careers advisers about what it?s like to work in these sectors, so that they can pass on the information in the classroom.
?These subjects are invaluable and critically important to our industry and by bringing school and office based careers advisers into a real life work environment, this means they will gain some insight into the range of careers within the sector.? By running events such as these, Careers Wales aims to make a difference and develop sustainable links with schools and industry.?
Careers Wales hope to organise more events like this in the future.
