Abstract

The Academy, with Young Minds Inspired, has created a series of curriculum guides to teach various aspects of filmmaking: animation, art direction, cinematography, costumes and make-up, documentary, film editing, media literacy, screenwriting, sound and music, and visual effects. Each guide contains four easy to use and adapt lessons which could be used as a stand alone mini-unit, or the entire series could be the foundation for a semester long unit.

Expected Student Outcomes/Objectives

1. To enhance student interest in and knowledge about the motion picture development and production process.
2. To encourage students to use critical thinking as they learn how cinematographers contribute to the process of creating a motion picture.
3. To engage students in an exploration of film as a medium of communication.
4. To help students become more visually literate.

Description

The Academy, in cooperation with Young Minds Inspired, produces a series of teacher?s guides that explore the art and science of motion pictures. The activities are designed to capitalize on students? natural interest in current films and the excitement generated by the Academy Awards to teach valuable lessons in critical thinking and creative writing, and to develop visual literacy skills. Each teaching guide is available in its entirety to download and print.

CTE teachers in an AME pathway should pay special attention to "supplementary" activities included at the end of each lesson that are designed for students to use filmmaking equipment and skills to produce short pieces exemplifying the lesson just learned.

Culminating Activity and/or Assessment

Varies by lesson. No larger assessment included to assess skills or learning gained by completing the entire series.

Instructional Materials Needed

Equipment needed to view suggested films and excerpts - these films and excerpts must also be procured. If doing supplementary activities, must have basic video production equipment.

Instructional Materials Provided

Curriculum guides are all available for downloading. The guide for the lesson on cinematography is included here as an example.

We review before posting
We review your curriculum prior to posting it in the Curriculum section of this website. In some cases, we may contact you and ask for additional information before making it available to other Academy teachers.

Using this form
1. Have your Access ID and password available.

2. Download the Submit Curriculum template, a Word document.

3. Using the template, enter the information required to create the curriculum listing. The word count feature in Word helps you observe limits for particular fields. If you reference other websites in your listing, copy their URLs from your browser's location field, and paste them into the appropriate fields in the template. Locate the documents on your own computer that you may wish to upload using the tools provided in the online form on the left to confirm they are available.

4. When you're satisfied with the listing as created in the template, save it. Then cut and paste information from the template to the online form on the left. Use the "Choose file" buttons in the form to link to files on your computer. Finally enter the Access ID and password, and submit the curriculum.

If you are familiar with HTML, click "Source" to edit the code directly. This enables a higher level of control.

5. You will have the option of returning to the curriculum record later to make additions or changes.
