DVAEYC Conference Draws 1000+ Early Childhood Educators to ...

Last week, the Delaware Valley Association for the Education of Young Children (DVAEYC) hosted its annual conference at the Philadelphia Convention Center, drawing thousands of infant and toddler educators from throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania for hands-on workshops and skills development classes designed to help them provide excellent care and education to our young children.

On May 11th and 12th, more than 1,200 infant and toddler educators took advantage of the speakers, classes, and programming DVAEYC organized as part of this year?s conference. A partner in the Promising Kids campaign, DVAEYC assists early childhood education professionals throughout the region by providing them with valuable training and career development ? including through the annual conference, which it?s been putting on for more than 40 years. As the regional branch of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, DVAEYC also helps area programs meet higher standards and accreditation.

The theme of this year?s conference was ?Family Matters.? Keynote speakers included Salome Thomas-El, head of school at Thomas Edison Charter School in Wilmington, DE, and Bill Corbett, parenting coach, television producer/host, and author of the Love, Limits & Lessons: A Parent?s Guide to Raising Cooperative Kids book series. Thomas-El, referred to affectionately as ?Principal El,? has built his career around helping children achieve their potential, based on his belief that ?Every child needs someone to be crazy about them.? Corbett, who has spoken to parents and professional organizations around the nation as a member of the American Psychological Association, focuses on helping parents and professionals take an innovative approach to discipline using new tools.

Dozens of workshops gave participants tools and training on how to best engage and empower the families of the young children in their care. Specific topics included making music a family affair, establishing relationships with families who speak different languages, and helping parents become partners in children?s inquiry-led science learning. Special sessions were also devoted to engaging fathers, to supporting parents who are in recovery from addiction, and to using blogs to keep families connected digitally, among many other topics.

As a parent, I am delighted to know that resources like this are available to the professionals who care for and educate Southeastern Pennsylvania?s youngest children. I hope children throughout the region benefit from the time and effort DVAEYC put into the planning and programming for this year?s conference.
